Women Local residents are invited to join a new women's studies club at McHenry County college. The club was organized recently by women at the college who are in terested in learning more about women's studies, in planning Women's History week activities and in researching local women's history. Anne Hecht, president of the new club, explains that the group also functions as a support group for women who would like to meet other women with similar experiences. Currently the club has 35 members who range from young college students to grandmothers and who live in varied areas of McHenry county. Members include those who are single, married and divorced and those who have children and those who are childless. Hecht expUlined that the majority of the current members are either forma- or current full and part-time students and that now the group would like to invite others in the community to join. Several members of the club are interested in working to establish a women's information cento* in the county, Hecht added. Currently the club has a monthly afternoon meeting at the college as well as a Friday evening social and discussion session once a month. Both sessions focus on areas of particular interest to women and will include informal discussions with women in McHeniy county who have a par ticular interest or expertise. Future topics will include the environment, women's health and the education of children. Anyone who would like to help the club increase public awareness of women's history and of women's abilities and problems is welcome to come to the October meetings. The day meeting is Thursday, Oct. 28, at MCC in room 243 at 12:45 p.m. The movie of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" will be shown. The speaker Li June Larson, national board of directors member of the en vironmental group HEAL and national EPA award winner. Ms. Larson will speak on herbicide and pesticides. The following evenin&^Frida y, Oct. 29, members are invited;to a social gathering at the home bf Darlene Saraowski in Woodstock. For additional information on the women's studies club, telephone the club's advisor, Mary Kurtzman, at the college (815) 455-3700. Ms. Hecht may also be reached by telephoning the college. TOON-UPS Keep tire pressure up to levels recommended in the car-owner's manual. Two pounds of underinflation can cut tire life up to 10 percent. Four pounds, top few can boost gas con sumption up to 8 percent. Replace worn or frayed drive belts and soft, brittle or bulging hoses-and keep a spare fan belt in the car. Check fluids frequently-engine oil, transmission, power-steering, radiator coolant, windshield washer- and add as necessary. Wire-brush corrosion off battery terminals and add water as needed- but don't smoke while working around batteries. Replace a worn windshield wiper so you can see in a rainstorm. A badly worn wiper can even scratch your windshield. Check lights including turn signals and hazard lights. Observe highway speed limits: 65 mph instead of the legal 55 mph can increase air resistance 40 percent and burn more gas-and cost you a speeding fine besides. Check spark plugs: A bag plug can waste as much as a gallon of gasoline in every 10.
