ctectthe voneyoaii Fox Valley Conference The Johnsburg Skyhawk volleyball team played its last regular season volleyball match against Wauconda Thursday, which was Parents Day at Johnsburg. The Skyhawks beat the Bulldogs in two games, which raised their con­ ference to 10-4 and 11-6 on the year. The Skyhawks servers were strong in the first game of the match; Threasa Hauck led all servers with eight straight serves, followed by Julie Anderson with six. Diane Heard had six spikes and Hauck led the team in sets with nine. The Skyhawks beat the Bulldogs by 15-3 score. In game two the serves weren't as fierce, but their spikes made up for it. Diane Heard had eight spikes, six of which were kills. Johnsburg won 15-9. Megan Hall led the squad with five serves, followed closely by Wendy Huemann. When aqked to comment on her teams perfomance, Coach Sharal Koenigseder said, "It was a fan­ tastic way to end our season". She added, "We play Wednesday to start regionals, and we're seeded number one. The competition will be tough; we will see teams like Marian Cern- tral and Richmond-Burton. For the first time in Crystal Lake South's five-year history, its gridiron Gators are & force to be reckoned with. And after an impressive 20-13 win Friday over Woodstock -- its seventh straight -- South finds itself in an unaccustomed spot as favorite to win the Fox Valley Conference title. Woodstock, which fell into a second place tie with Crystal Lake Central, saw its playoff hopes dim con­ siderably. The Gators simply dismembered the Blue Streak offense and moved virtually at will through Woodstock's defense, led by tailback Chet Kopec who had an unofficial 250 yards rushing. The Blue Streaks managed only 90 yards on the ground. Quarterback Greg Bradshaw tossed for 139 yards and on£ touchdown, but also threw four interceptions. "We were nervous," said Wood­ stock coach Bob Bradshaw. "We did things we didn't do all year. It seems like we never got the hold of the game like we wanted to. "They (South) did the job -- you have to give them credit," he added. "Their offense controlled the game as much as their defense." Woodstock had an early chance to take the momentum as it stopped the visitors on their second drive as Dan Krause recovered a Kopec fumble at the Streak 15. Woodstock moved quickly for a first down at their its 33, but then stalled as Bradshaw missed three straight passes. The Streaks then punted and the Gators took over at their own 44. That's were Kopec and Co. took over. On first down, the 5-9,175-pound back blasted through the middle and went off on a 56-yard, sideline dash for a touchdown at the 3:12 mark of the first period. Placekicker Bob Gerhard added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. "We scored on that play an awful lot (this season)," said Gator coach Bob Hight. Tigers Roll Over Marian take Harvard HARVARD -- The Marian volleyball team defeated Richmond, North Boone and Harvard to capture the Harvard tournament. The Hurricanes defeated Richmond 16-14 and 15-9 in the first round and then went on to defeat North Boone 15- 9 and 15-13. They faced Harvard for the championship and won 11-15, 15-6 and 15-11. Holly Ryan led the Hurricanes with 25 points, fouraces and five kills. Beth Penza had 21 points, two aces and four kills. The Hurricanes finished the season with a 10-12 overall record and 3-10 in the West Suburban Catholic Conference. They travel to Richmond Tuesday for a regional meet. "The girls' played very well," said Marian Coach Linda Hoppman. STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB Warriors Defend FVC Boy's Harrier Title With Ease And Girl's Are Second The McHenry Warrior boys cross country team captured its second straight Fox Valley Conference title and for the second straight year a Warrior was the top individual finisher. Hie meet was held at McHenry West Campus. The Warrior girls' were edged by Crown for the girls' FVC title. Second place was the highest the Warriors ever finished in a conference meet. Last year they finished third. Steve Carby was the first runner to finish in the boys race. His time of 16:06.8 edged out rival Jim Lane of Crystal Lake Central for the in­ dividual champion honors. Last year Wade Cepulis was the individual champion for the Warriors. "I thought the girls could win," said Bill Hutchinson, the Warrior coach. "But the girls didn't run their best race. They ran good, but not good enough to win." Delia Saunders was the first Warrior to finish in the girls race. She crossed the line at 12:25 for second place. The girls' scored 61 points and Crown scored 47 points. Right behind McHenry was Woodstock with 71 and Crystal Lake South at 92. Kelly Brough was the second Warrior to finish in the 3500 meter Skyhawk Harriers Finish 5th At NSC Meet WAUCONDA -- The Johnsburg Skyhawks overcame injuries and illness to finish fifth at the Northwest Suburban Conference meet Saturday. In the final conference standings, the Skyhawks tied Round Lake for sixth place. Warren captured the conference championship with 64 points and finished on top of the final standing; finishing with an undefeated record. Antioch was second with 79 points, Lake Zurich was third with 103 points and Wauconda was fifth at 106. Grant was sixth with 127, Round Lake seventh with 130 and Grayslake eighth at 132. Dexter Dade of Round Lake was the first runner to cross the finish line. Coming off a leg injury, Jay Jackson was the first Skyhawk to finish with a fifth place finish. This was the first meet for Jackson since the injury. Jim Leon finished in eighth place, Mike Lawrence was 28th, Jeff Nichols 36th, Mike Dodge 44th, Chris Tennison 47th and Ken Schoening 54th. Jeff Pankiewicz, a sophomore, did an excellent job. He ran a good race. "They only had 28 points; that's a pretty low score. Next Saturday should be our peak." Saturday is the regional meet. After Carby and Lane, the Warriors captured the next three positions. Chris Creutz was third at 16:23, Brian Wright was fourth at 16:55 and Marty Koleno was fifth at 17:01. Terry Harth was the next Warrior to finished at 15th, Jeff Pankiewicz was 18th and Jim Wynveen was 25th. race at llth place. Hutchinson was not surprised with the boys' performance. "The top four did an excellent job staying up there," he said. "Freshman Terry Harth, the fifth man, did an excellent job and Teachers Bowling League ner each rolled a 610 with handicap. Dave Luchetl led the individual high scratch games with a 225 . He also took over second high game handicap with a 261. In the splits department; Ann Larkin picked up the 8-9 and the 5-7. Sub Marge Voase got the 6-7-10 and had a 180 scratch. Shirley Blume had a 182 scratch to lead the ladies. A1 Boeldt and Marge Baranowski continued to lead their respective division with the high averages in the league. Boeldt has a 172 and Marge a Welcome to the initial report of the McHenry Teacher's League. We are already into the sixth week of bowling with four teams within half game of each other for first place. Currently the "WOK's" and "None of the Above" have an identical record of 15.5 wins and 8.5 losses. Rich Wielemann turned in a series of 202-159-216 -- 577. It earned him top spot with a series handicap of 6.82 for the year. Other scores of note: Beth Marcello rolled a 152 scratch (best game ever) and Sandy Vitale and Carolyn Buitt- THE WINNER -- Steve Carby is approaching the finish line as the Fox Valley Conference individual champion.
