MODEL 6216 TRACTOR WE'VE GOT McHENRY GOLD PAGE 22 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. OCTOBER 29. 1982 Present Planning Award For Area Land Evaluation Eight governmental agencies, two private research groups, and the^ Chicago Tribune were recently given awards for their contributions to community planning. The awards were granted by the 900 member Illinois Chapter of the American Planning association, the national professional association for city planners. Two award recipients were McHenry county, and DeKalb county, jointly lauded for their Land Evaluation and Site Assessment system. The system pioneers a new methodology for evaluating prime agricultural land and preserving it from development. Another dual award went to Kane county and the Max McGraw Wildlife foundation for their Assessment of Wildlife and Wildlife Habitats. Solid research, a defendable evaluation methodology, and the potential transferability of the techniques to other planning jurisdictions were the merits of this award winner. The awards were presented in Madison, Wis., during a four-state regional conference of the American Planning association. "All of the awards were for truly outstanding efforts," said Bruce Heckman, APA's awards chairman, "The choice was particularly difficult because of the large number of high quality en tries." <DoU a uuice SPECIAL ON SNOW THROWERS Thru December 31, 1982 Iti WALK BEHIND MODELS •5 HP $570* •7 HP $720* •8 HP $790 •10 HP *890 All of above include Chains & Electric Start Hurry Limited Supply! FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 10, 1932). It was a Democratic landslide in state and nation with Roosevelt elected as president and Horner as governor of Illinois by un precedented majorities. The Senate and House in Washington will be overwhelmingly Democratic and presumably wet, indicating that the Democrats who made the country dry during the period of the war 14 years ago, will probably make it wet again after March 4. 9 Judge Henry Horner of Chicago was elected governor over Len Small by a landslide vote. The new governor will take office in January, following the organization of the state legislature. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 12, 1942). Draft Board I of McHenry county filled its first November quota when eight young men left on an early train to become soldiers of Uncle Sam. Those who left from McHenry in cluded Fred J. Meyer and Harold J. Ferwerda. Andrew Hawley left fifem Ringwood. The Post Office department now is starting the most gigantic task in its history - the movement of a deluge of Christmas parcels, cards and letters. Christmas mail to be dispatched to servicemen must be in the mails by Dec. 5. Donald Meyers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meyers, has enlisted in the Navy and will leave next week. William Kinsala, second son of the Hairy Kinsalas, entered the service at Camp Grant. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 7, 1957). Once again McHenry has reason to express special pride in two of its young people. They are Mark Zim merman, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zimmerman, and Karen Sch- melzer, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Schmelzer. Both members of the Cherry Valley 4-H club, they were announced as 1957 winners of national honors for their work in 4-H over a period of several years at the annual 4-H achievement night held at Harvard high school The former Brefeld building which served as a home for the teaching Sisters of Mercy from 1951 when St. Patrick's school was opened, until this fall, has been newly remodelled and the result is a very attractive struc ture for the four teaching nuns at St. Patrick's. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 8, 1972). Considerable time was devoted to discussion of the drug situation in the McHenry schools when the board of' High School District 156 met last week in East campus. At the con clusion, it was voted to pass, un changed until further notice, the Drug Abuse policy adopted for a 30- day trial period a month ago. During this time, school officials have also reviewed policies from other districts, as well as literature from the state office. - McHenry's City Council has at tempted to solve the problem of disposing of leaves by announcing that city trucks would pick up leaves put in plastic bags and placed on tree banks near the curb. This seemed to be a solution to the "no burning" laws in the state. We always love those who admire us, but we do not always love those whom we admire. PRICES WILL NEVER BE THIS LOW AGAIN! BUDDY'S WORKSHOP Every time I use the steam iron, I blow • fuse. What is the problem? If the fuse blows only when the iron is used, there probably is a short circuit in the iron. But, if the fuse blows when other appliances are being used on the same circuit, the problem could be an overload. Check the iron carefully to see if a power cord is frayed. If such is not evi dent, disconnect all appliances except the iron from the circuit and see if it may be used without blowing a fuse. If the problem is overload, you need to have some of the appliances taken off the circuit. If the problem is with the iron, have it repaired. But never, never try to solve the problem by replacing the blown fuse with one having a larger capacity. |[HI Nil HIIII fJUHilll.
