PAGE 24 - PLAINWEALEK -\\ KDNESDAY, NOVEMBER3,1982 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 10, 1932) In McHenry county the entire Republican ticket was successful, from Hoover down to the county ticket, the county candidates, State's Attorney V.S. .Lumley, Circuit Clerk Will T. Conn and Coroner E.H. Cook winning by very satisfactory majorities in view of the Democratic landslide. It was a very busy day among the leaders of both parties in McHenry county, especially in Woodstock, always the center of the political activities. A bitter factional fight was waged against Congressman Frank R. Reid in this county, as well as throughout the district. He carried this county and the district by a safe margin. For state representatives there was no contest, William M. Carroll and Richard J. Lyons, Republican, and Thomas A. Bolger, Democrat, being the only candidates for the three places to be filled. FORT* YEARS AGO (Taken from tfre files of November 12, 1942) ' The citizens of McHenry and the Plaindealer are responsible for the paper being sent each week to ser vicemen from McHenry and the immediate vicinity. Beginning Nov. 13 the Karls Cafe on Riverside drive will be closed for about eight weeks, as I am taking a vacation and going to the west coast. I expect to reopen on or about Jan. 16. Edith Karls." Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Sayler and daughter, Susan, have moved from the home of her father, J.W. Freund, on Riverside drive, to their new home on Center street. Mr. and Mrs. Her man Nye of Aurora are now making their home with Mr. Freund. Mrs. Nye was the former Cornelia Freund. From Bowling Notes: Marilyn Schaefer's 414 was the shining light as Marian's Beauty girls won two from Stilling's "66". Nadine was the chief sixty-sixer with 421. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 7, 1957) Four new classrooms have been added to the St. Patrick's school. They will accommodate between 160 and 175 more pupils. The school, which opened in 1951 with about 50 students, now has more than 300 attending classes. A major point has been reached in the construction at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. The entire addition has now been glassed in and interior work is well under way. The three-level addition at the west of the hospital will cost almost a million dollars when completed. In their most spirited start since the beginning of the season the MCHS Warriors were unable to win the final game of the year as they lost to Woodstock 7 to 0. The Little Warriors won their fourth straight game 7 to 0 over Woodstock. John Steinbeck, quarterback, has called terrific plays and signals all season. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 10, 1972) Ballot splitting described in some circles as a "new, sophisticated system", brought history making victories and disastrous defeats to candidates of both parties in Tuesday's vote. President Nixon was swept into office for the second term with a win over Democratic Senator George McGovern. Daniel Walker, the Democrat who stumped the state of Illinois in a hand-shaking cam paign, won over Governor Richard B. Ogilvie. Most popular vote getter in the state was William J. Scott, who was returned to the office of Attorney General. A rare Eurasian (albino) deer has been spotted roaming through the city by officers of the McHenry Police department during the past few days. The deer was first sighted Sunday morning about 2 o'clock near Green and Waukegan streets. The animal fled toward the McHenry Country club grounds. DENTAL ASSISTANTS' WEEK Dental Assistants' Recognition week is being observed Nov. 7-13. The week acknowledges the contributions that dental assistants have1 made to the dental profession.
