Know THE Drunk Driver Arrests During the month of October, state troopers assigned to patrol the Illinois tollroad made 269 arrests for driving under the influence or drunk driving. "This is the most arrests we've ever made in one month and brings our total for the first 10 months under the new drunk driving law to 1,529,' stated Captain Hugh S. McGinley, commander of Illinois State Police District 15. A concentration of manpower in specific areas known for drunk drivers and an individual dedication by each trooper assigned to patrol this high activity area has led to an average five DUI arrests per day in District 15. "Our main objective is to get the drunk and drinking drivers off the road before they involve innocent motorists in serious accidents. To achieve this objective I will increase the number of troopers Friday and Saturday nights and holiday weekends, a time when most drunk drivers take to the road.", McGinley added. The VA has guaranteed home loans of more than $184 billion for nearly 11 million veterans. Weather How fast do cold fronts move across the country? Why do they "sneak in" on us, on some occasions, almost without warning? Cold fronts move faster than warm fronts but they usually don't travel more than thirty or thirty-five, miles an hour, eastward. The reason this comes in with a bang, and unex pectedly, quite often, is that they arrive on the surface before they appear in the skies above. The leading edge of a cold front is found on the surface of the earth, and slants backward--in the direction from which it is coming. Therefore, because the ,cold front moves fast, and is windy, we feel and see its effects .suddenly--in com parison with the warm front, which arrives overhead first, moves slower and often brings less turbulence. , BUDDY'S WORKSHOP How to Measure Replacement Glass J My adghbor and I are good friends and help one another - with do-it'yoarsclf projects. With our combined know- ledge and talents, we're still far from proficient, just suf ficient. We disagree frequently, such as on the matter of how to accurately measure to determine the dimensions v ofgfans needed to replace a broken window pane. My friend > says the measurement should be made so that the pane fits 0 snugly; I contend that, if you measure exactly, and the PjJjJJ iSteM-ElbiMu You are right. Measure "short" by at least one-eighth of an inch. This allows for a margin of error on the part of r the glass cuUer and also allows for expansion and contrac- 1 tion of the wood as the seasons change. You are also able to more firmly bed the glass in putty to seal out the entry of air. is the inexperienced painter likely to do the best job with a paint roller or brush? \Whether a roller or brush is used, the quality of the job • win depend upon selection and application. Rollers are constructed of various materials and most of them may j be used to apply any kind of paint. Some are designed, » however, to leave a textured effect. Rollers do not elimin- S ate the need for touching up with a brush, unless you can J remove all the molding. One needs to be more specific • when choosing a paint brush. The best suggestion for the j beginner is that he select the paint and ask the paint dealer to recommend the brushes. Strive for an even application, whether you usie brush or roller. Lap marks are the result of carelessness. so"8SPh SPECIAL OFFER j TO I • ORGANIZATIONS * • CHURCH GROUPS ? • BUSINESSES \ * h ' , "V ; j < 0 a*o£LU0SL nJ jiiuqU, "W^SORORITIES | • MANUFACTURERS j , . anyone planning $ j'jj I ADULT OR CHILDREN J CHRISTMAS PARTIES $ OBTAIN EXTRA SAVINGS andlor » TAX EXEMPT DISCOUNTS $ Com* into Hoiniby » «nd aik (of m»n»9»r H# will personally gi»« Q you • dtai and help you select and order your gifts ^ O Don t forget to bring your state sales lai exemption number it your ^ organization has one 4400 West Rte. 120 a McHenry ,.ll •* r'n Woodstock. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD The McHenry hospital public relations department was recently honored with two awards from the Wisconsin Hospital Public Relations council, in its annual competition for hospitals in the midwest. The contest is judged in several categories including special purpose publications, audio visual materials, internal and external newsletters and magazines, and other selected categories relating to health care public relations. Hospitals compete in two main divisions: those with more than 150 beds, and those with 150 beds or less. Barbara J. Luther, public relations director for McHenry hospital, won the award of excellence for the hospital's 1981 annual report. This is the top prize for an outstanding special purpose publication, and denotes excellence in design, layout, photography, writing and total con cept. Photography for the annual report was done by Weg Thomas of McHenry. The department also received an award of merit in the category of total public relations program, which in cludes all internal and external publications, exhibits, promotional concepts, advertising, and general communications. McHenry hospital was the only health care facility to receive an award in the com prehensive category in its division this year. Hospitals from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota enter the WHPRC competition as a means to be judged by their peers in the com munications field, and to be evaluated on strengths and weaknesses in a program in order to provide better public relations in health care. Ms. Luther, a McHenry resident, has been the hospital's public relations director since June of 1981 "Anchors Aweigh," theme song of the U.S. Navy, was written in 1906 by three sailors on shore leave.
