He said the main skills the team is working on to develop before the season approaches is rebounding, screening out and ball handling. Directing Warrior teams to five regional championships and one sectional championship in the past, Ludwig has high hopes for this squad. "I think we have a good shot of taking the conference." The Warriors open up the season at the Sycamore holiday tournament next Friday. They take on Sycamore in the first round. Besides Fox Valley opponents, the Warriors will play in the Wheeling Tournament and at Zion and Waukegan West. Only 10 players came out for Coach Ben Beck's squad. This is Beck's second season at the Johnsburg helm. Last season the Skyhawks suffered through a 6-19 overall record. With only 10 kids to work with, Beck isn't discouraged. "If "we had two more, we would have a nice squad. We would like to have a couple more, but that just is not going to be the case," said Beck. "It's very exciting to be with these young men. They get the job done. They have a very good attitude." Like last year, size will be a problem for the Skyhawks. The biggest player will be sophomore Tom Meehan at 6-foot-3. "Playing in the Northwest Suburban Conference, I imagine we are going to see sombody at 6-5 or 6-7 at the post all the time. "We have to do five things. Don't allow the other team a second shot, neutralize the boards -- we do have some boys who can jump very well. Secondly, we have to find the capability to bring tne uc" up the floor and at the same time not let people do it against us. Obviously, on defense we have to play aggressive and we can't let the other team set up and over power us. We have to dictate tempo." Last year, Beck said they had a rough time putting the ball in the Scoreboard Soccer 67 DIVISION Maroon Lightning def. Blue Streaks 4-1. Green Hornets def. Orange Eagles 6-0. Red Rug Rats def. The Skyhawks have three returning lettermen: 5-foot-9 Jim Leon, guard; 6-foot Jeff Fowler, guard and 6-foot-l John Wharton, forward. "Jeff (Fowler) is looking very strong defensively and he is working extremely hard. His experience is showine right now. "Jim Leon--I haven't had a player work harder during the off-season. He's not a very big kid, but you don't measure heart by size. "Jim Wharton saw little action last year." - * The Northwest Suburban Con ference is very competitive according to Beck and said, "this a big step for IB." What has Beck more positive about this group than last year's squad is the shape the players reported to the first practice. "They came in better condition and better shape than last year. They are better prepared." Beck says Warren will be the team to beat in the conference. "I think Warren looks pretty tough. They have very good size. Antioch and Lake Zurich look good. But, for us everybody is very tough. Anytime you play teams twice the size as you are, you are going to have a tough time every game. "We feel our athletes are taking the right approach. The kids are working hard. Everybouy (the conference) is in the same position. It could be worse."
