"There is fine jewelry to fit just about any pocketbook," Gleim continues. "But, be­ ware of so-called 'bargains' through mail-order ads that promise you gold jewelry and gemstones at unbelievable prices. "A $6.00 chain may be so thin it is not repairable . . . or, perhaps it is only the clasp that has gold content. "That $5.00 diamond may look good because it's pack­ aged under a magnifying glass. Or, that so-called bar­ gain designer-watch may work for only a week or so. "Unfortunately," Gleim continues, "when one of these problems occurs, there is no one for the customer to tum to f o r s e r v i c e , r e p a i r s , o r returns." Gleim offered some basic buying tips: • When buying gold jew­ elry, always look for a karat mark, such as 18k, 14k, 10k. etc., stamped somewhere on the piece.
