Pressure From Bottom Might Bring Success To Wrestlers "Pressure from the bottom." That's the part of the 1982 McHenry Warrior Wrestling program that Coach Marty Sohczak believes will bring success to his varisty squad. Sobczak, a 15 year veteran wrestling coach, has 22 freshmen and is not ruling out the possibility of a couple of those freshmen wrestling varsity. "With that kind of pressure from the bottom, there is a good chance a few freshmen Will wrestle varsity occasionally," said Sobczak. One of those freshmen who will defintely create some pressure and could crack the varsity lineup, according to Sobczak, will be Russ Bunday at 98 pounds. He was a state champion in the Illinois elementary cham­ pionships. The last couple years the junior varsity team has not had the luxury of a full lineup, but this year should be different. "Because we have so many freshmen, the J.V. team will have a full lineup. The last few years; the J.V. team did not have a full lineup and lost quite a few matches because of it." The freshmen will have to create a lot of pressure to crack the lineup, however, because Sobczak says he has one of the best senior groups he has ever had. He has seven lettermen returning from .last, year's team that had an overall record of 6-11. But what is so deceiving about that record is some of those losses are really wins. The Warriors were 5-2 before Christmas, when Sobczak was informed that one of his wrestlers was inelgible to wrestle during those first seven matches. Sobczak said he was really proud of that group for coming back with the record they did. The two disadvantages Sobc­ zak is having is the short time he has had the wrestlers who were on the football team and an in­ jury. The injured wrestler is Steve Carby. The 126 pounder developed side ache problems the last two weeks of cross country and has not yet reported for wrestling practice. A returning lettermen, Carby was 17-8 last year. Mike Love and John Clewis were Two returning lettermen who were on the football team. Love was 10-14 last season at 138 pounds and Clewis was 5-6 at 185 pounds. John Keevil, Rick Connor, Bob Sarabia and Tom Kucek are the other four returning lettermen. Rick Conner was 13-14-1 at 119 pounds and led the squad in total take downs. Sarabia was 7-14 at 126 pounds and Tom Kucek was 4- 11 at 167 and 185 pounds. "We also have plenty of un­ derclassmen that didn't wrestle on the varsity, but wrestle well on the J.V.'s." They are; Roland Hunt, Bob Hawley, Jeff Greany, Dan Mohnen and Eric Gaza. All are juniors. "This year they are ready to wrestle," said Sobczak. "Quite a few of these kids went to summer camps and quite a few of these kids went out for a fall sport. They are in good condition and have a good positive attitude." Sobczak keeps a board with the different weight classes posted on it. On each hook underneath the weight classes are names of the wrestlers who are listed number one at that class. "They look at that board and they say, we have a team. I see no reason why we can't greatly improve our record." STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Wrestlers Start Season With 2 Wins Coach Marty Sobczak had some question marks about how well his McHenry Warrior Wrestling team would do at the start of the season. Some of those question marks were put to rest as the Warriors earned two wins over Rockton-Hononegah and St. Edwards in a double dual held at the East Campus Gym Saturday. One of those question marks was freshmen Russ Bunday at 98 pounds. He not only defeated both of his opponents, but he and junior Jeff Greany at 185 pounds pinned both of their opponents in the first period of each match. "I'm always concerned about a freshman wrestler," .said Sobc­ zak. "That (the four pins) really set things up for us." The Warriors edged Hononegah 28-25 and then had little trouble with St. Edwards 54- 9. Si. Edwards lost to Hononegah 53-9. Also winning both their mat­ ches were Bob Sarabia at 126 pounds, Mike Love at 138 pounds and Bob Hawley at 155 pounds. All three recorded one fall and one decision. Sobczak named both Bunday and Greany "Wrestler of the Week." Sobczak was a happy coach, but he still saw some problem areas. "We have a lot to work on next week before Mundelein. It's a good start. We came out better •han I thought. "I was pleased with the response by the kids wrestling two matches. I was also pleased with the crowd. There had to be at least 180-190 people. They were very vociferous and very in­ volved with the kids. The kids reacted to that." Additional falls for McHenry were scored by Erick Gaza at 112 and Ric Connor at 119. Both are juniors and were 1-1 for the double dual. Gaza's pin againt Boria of St. Edwards in 22 seconds was the quickest pin of the afternoon. John Keevil at 105 pounds and Tom Kucek at 167 pounds, both seniors, decision their St. Ed­ wards' opponents and lost decisions to Hononegah. Wrestling only one match and scoring decisions were Roland Hunt at 145 pounds and Dan Mohnen at unlimited, both juniors. Picking up the second 145 pounds and unlimited matches were Paul Voss and Tom True. Both these seniors were defeated. "At the heavyweight level, our boys had limited experience. With a little hard work they reinforced those spots," said Sobczak. Chris Creutz surrendered both his matches at 132 pounds due to a shoulder injury. The McHenry freshmen- sophomore wrestlers also began their season with two wins, defeating Hononegah 60-11 and St. Edwards 60-6. Falls were scored by Chris Mann, Chris Sch- waum, Tom Wrona, Jim Shaver, Mark Jones, Ray Sanders, Wayne Beyer, Randy Hawley, Tom Etheridge and Pat Miller. "We will be competing against some very tough wrestlers, but we are aiming for a winning season," said March. Last year's Skyhawk wrestlers ended their second season with eight wins and six losses. March believes the Skyhawks can start off their season on the upswing. "The team has a very good shot at having a 3-1 or even a 4-0 record by the end of November." Conference action for the Skyhawks will begin in December and March expects to see Grant, Antioch and Lake Zurich holding the upper hand. Returning to the wrestling team is senior Mike Hurckes at 138 pounds. "I'm looking for moat of our points to come from Hurckes and Swanson. These two are our strongest wrestlers and both have some very advanced individual skills. I feel the other schools will have their hands full trying to contend with these two," said March. March also expects to see some outstanding performances by Dryer and Cahill as they get a few matches under their belts and refine some of their techniques. "The entire team is an outstanding group of guys, who are extremely dedicated to the sport of wrestling," said March. He explained that 14 of the guys attended the Warhawk wrestling camp in Whitewater, Wise., while a few of thewrestlersattended a camp at Northern Indiana State over the summer. He added a number of wrestlers were involved with in­ dependent tournaments throughdut the summer. "I'm extremely pleased with the freshmen who are coming up into the program," said March. "They already have a solid background in the fundamentals, which allows me to start working with them on techniques and fine tuning right away," One of die key freshmen will be Shawn Kee who will be starting with the varsity. March says the program has come a long way. Last year they had a 27 member team which was paid for by the coaches, players and their families. This year March has 30 to 36 wrestlers on the team and is now considered a school sponsored sport and has become a part of the athletic program and 80 students will be "participating in the kindergarten through fifth grade program ova- the winter. "With this kind of training, I believe my goal of the Skyhawks is being in the top of the Northwest Suburban Conference within the next two years is realistic." Rockets Defeated In Overtime 17-10 RICHMOND -- Six inches. Half the length of a football. That was the difference between victory and defeat as Bloomington Central Catholic shattered Richmond- Burton's state championship dreams 17-10 in overtime in the Class 2A football semifinals Saturday. The Saints rallied from a 10-0 deficit halftime deficit and took a 17-10 lead on their first possession in overtime. But the Rockets, relying on the con­ sistent running of Henry Halverson, nearly came back as the senior back carried the ball from the 10 to the half- foot line on three runs. But on his fourth try, Bloomington Catholic stacked the defensive line and stopped the Rocket senior cold at the one-yard-line. That was it. Once-beaten Catholic will now battle Casey in Friday's Class 2A state championship game. Richmond-Burton, ending the season at ll-l, will watch from the sidelines, knocked out in the semifinals for the second straight year.
