Chrysalis Records is warning radio stations not to play Pat Banatar't new album in its entirety because that is, they say, an invitation to home taping. A & M Records is tak ing a different tack. By releas ing the new Supertramp LP on high-quality, chrome diox ide tape, they say they will discourage home taping by providing superior quality in a pre-recorded cassette. Bob Segar'g new album is finally finished. It's called "The Distance" and will be out any time now... John Cougar plans to produce a comeback for "60s blue-eyed soul singer Mitch Ryder, leader of the Detroit Wheels... Iggy Pop has written an autobiography enti tled "I Need More." Sweden's Parliament passed a law against selling excessively violent home videos to minors after they were shown a copy of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."... When Herb Alpart played the Los Angeles Amphitheater, he gave every woman in the audi ence a long-stemmed rose and a card signed "With Love, Herb Alpert." Considering what 3,500 roses must have cost, it's a good thing the man owns a record company. REVIEWS Alley Cats -- "Escape from the Planet Earth (MCA) -- Remember when protesting American youths were told: "If you don't like it here, move"? Well, the Alley Cats seem to be dissatisfied with more than America; they're sick of the whole ball of mud. Nothing inside this LP matches the quality of the evocative cover art by artist Yumi Chai, but perhaps it will reach a following on the basis of "misery loves company." Barry Reynolds -- "I Scare Myself" (Island) -- It was Reynolds' songwriting that gave Marianne Faithfull her comeback; their "Broken English" collaboration is included here. Reynold's deliv ery, though, is much more upbeat. Perhaps the Sly Dunbar/Robbie Shakespeare rhythm section adds life maybe it's just that you Cc get too depressed whi e recording in the Bahamas. It's a strange sort of album, impossible to pigeonhole, but it grows on you in its low- keyed way. ©1982 Compulog
