STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAVLORD MCHENRY SHORES Nina Keen 044-2665 Requirements For Election There have been some questions brought up as to the residency requirements for running in the aldermatic election this coming spring. The law states you must be a resident of the city of McHenry for one year prior to the election, but due to the annexation of McHenry Shores into the city of McHenry, the requirements for anyone from McHenry Shores are that you must have been a resident of McHenry Shores from April 12, 1982. This question had to be researched and checked by city attorney Bernard Narusis, simply because of the precedence that we set, annexing into the eity. '?! VEHICLE STICKERS NOW AVAILABLE City of McHenry vehicle stickers are now available for 1983. On Dec. 8, the Major Gifts unit of Northern Illinois Medical center's "Reach for Tomorrow" Capital Fund drive will hold their kick-off dinner at John Evans restaurant in Crystal Lake. At the head of the Major Gifts unit is Rick Lane. Lane joined the staff of McHenry State bank in 1969, where he is presently Vice President in charge of lending. He and his wife, Janice, moved from Kenosha, Wis., in 1971 and reside in Johnsburg with their four daughters Sue 17, Amy l^Xindy 14, and Kathy 12. Active in the community for several years, Lane is a past president of the McHenry Chamber of Commerte, past president of the Kenosha Jaycees, a retired member of the Johnsburg Rescue squad, and current treasurer of the First United Methodist church. Helping Lane reach his goal of $170,000 are section leaders, A1 Jourdan and Jack Pepping, and division leaders, Duane Andreas, Clint Claypool, Elizabeth Nolan, and M. Kendall Bird. Several unit cap tains will also be active in the cam paign. When asked why he became in volved in the major gifts campaign effort, Lane answered, "I believe that our community is going to continue to grow and prosper. Our present hospital facility has been outgrown by the community. We need a larger facility and a better equipped facility to take care of our present and future needs." The major gifts campaign is one of four units of the "Reach for Tomorrow" campaign. The other three units include family gifts, lead gifts, and community teams. The family unit represents em ployees, physicians, and hospital auxiliary members. The employees are the first to complete their soliciting and have reported $177,551 which is 48 percent over their goal of RICK LANE $120,000. The physicians have reached 68 percent of their $450,000 goal with $331,000 already pledged while the auxiliary has 69 percent of their $30,000 goal attained with pledges totaling $20,705. The lead gifts unit held a kick-off dinner recently and have received pledges totalling $167,000 to date. Community Teams kick-off is scheduled for Jan. 11 and is under the leadershiD of John Huemanri! General chairman of the "Reach for Tommorrow" Capital Development project is James Althoff. Honorary chairman is Earl R. Walsh. With continued support, the overall campaign goal of $1,600,000 is certain to be reached e TODAY'S PSYCHOLOGY Dr. Steve Brody, PhD Most of us sense that lis tening is important in family life, but few of us have had any training in effective lis tening. Each September we teach our marital communica tions class at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. A common pit fall we discuss in our class is how we tend to let our de- fensiveness get in the way of good listening. For the past two weeks, my wife had been trying to tell me something about pit ching in with the kids. I would immediately get de fensive, feel accused and somewhat guilty, and sulk off angrily to my office. Blocked feelings, either within an individual or in a relationship, create distance. What 1 finally heard was how lonely and abandoned she had been feeling. So close the lips, open the eyes and ears, and really lis ten. You might even learn something.
