Seek Trust Money For MCC PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. DECEMBER 3,1982 by Kurt Begalka i SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE McHenry County college has a chance at $700,000, but the institution will have to move quickly. The Ames Trust, operated by Home State Bank of Crystal Lake, onginally was established to build a hospital in Crystal Lake. But construction never occurred, and the money sat for the designated 20 years. $ According to MCC President Robert Bartlett, barring construction of a hospital, the funds were to be targeted for "a project that would serve the general public of Crystal Lake and its regional environs." The college aims to be that project. Besides the monetary ceiling, other stipulations are that the application be made prior to Jan. 1 and that the money be used strictly for a single capital development project. Bartlett suggested the funds could be used to develop one of two "pods," designed to adjoin the multi-purpose building. The concept is part of the college's master plan. Bartlett stressed that only three walls would be needed for the estimated 14,000-square-foot addition. "If we assume $50 a square foot for construction, that's right within the parameters," he added. "Such a pod could be a community development center." He said the building could be used by the community for seminars and other public-oriented events. "We haven't been able to meet that demand," he said. Bartlett suggested a free-standing emergency medical services building on the southeast portion of the campus as another alternative. Classes on emergency ambulance treatment and rescue squad operations would be taught there. "Sometime within the next two weeks, we need your ideas," Bartlett said. "I know that sounds like I'm shooting from the hip, but we're running out of time." MCC board Cnairwoman Barbara Kropp directed the board's con duction committee Ao look into the matter and bring its^suggestions to the next meeting on Dec. 16. In another financial matter, the trustees tabled a request by Union Special Corp. to abate real estate taxes on its Huntley plant. It is the second request of its kind to come before the board following an amendment to the Illinois Revenue act. In June the board denied Actown- Electrocoil Inc. of Spiing Grove to receive an abatement of $160. Thfe amendment applies to in dustrial firms in the taxing district in question which have moved there, are newly created or have expanded. Union Special sought an abatement of property taxes for the maximum 10- year period specified under the new amendment. For 1962-63 that amount would be $675. The company is adding 42,000 square feet to its Huntley plant at an estimated cost of $1,350,000. The company estimates it will bring 196 new jobs to the area. Trustee William Ryan favored the abatement, stressing the company's 30 years of service in the area and consistent employment of 713 people. Trustee Herbert Lutter agreed, saying such an action might attract industry and increase the tax base. "This could be aii extreme sales tool," Lutter said. But other trustees were not con vinced that the end justified the means. "That $675 is just a drop in the bucket of what it's going to be," Trustee Eugene Meyer said. "It's just getting their (companies') foot in the door." Trustee David Murphy noted, "I think its going to open the floodgates and everyone is going to apply." He also expressed his concern about the board's criteria for approving or denying requests, u. Ms. Kropp agreed. "We're going to see a lot more of this," she said. "I think it's appropriate that we develop a policy." The board agreed to have the finance committee study the matter and offer suggestions before they acted on the request. • 5 Bartlett said that that with current economic conditions MCC, like other institutions, is fighting to survive. "We have to find out whether we can afford to open the door before we know what we're opening it to," he said. As he told the trustees, "We really don't have a great deal of ex perience to run from." This Spanish custom never grows old. Let the kids help make the pinata by folding squares of white paper and cutting them into snowflakes. Paste the snowflakes onto the outside of a paper grocery bag. After the kids have decorated the bag, the "filling" is your secret. Place small, non- breakable toys, gum, C r a c k e r J a c k s , wrapped candy, balls, etc. in the bottom three- fourths of the decorated bag. Tie a ribbon at the top of this section of filled bag. Fill the remainder of the bag with the same. This top portion is the snowman's head. Glue on blue buttons for eyes, a curved row of red buttons for his smile, etc. Tie the top of the bag shut with a string that is long enough to hang onto something in the center of the room or to a windowless door, etc. Let the kids punch the bag with something that they won't hurt each other with but that will cause the pinata to break. Watch the merriment as the kids scrambled for the spilled goodies. En courage the youngsters to look around and see if the others have received a fair share of goodies; if not, they will receive a special portion of joy by giving some of their treats to their friends. Keep a small supply to give a child that may not have received as much as the others and to whom the others may not have noticed in their excitement; your giving will help the others to be concerned for " each other. Happy partying with the younger ones as well. STUNNING CHRISTMAS CENTERPIECES Arrange tall candles on a mirror. Place a basic centerpiece of greenery around the base of the candles. Then, at different meals, change the decorations in the greenery by adding e i t h e r C h r i s t m a s baubles, tiny, wrapped packages, candy canes, gumdrops, pine cones or tiny reindeer, etc. You will want to take special precautions to keep the candles out of the children's reach. Watch the reflections from the mirror sparkle in your loved ones' eyes. BEN FRANKLIN 385-0806 1250 N.
