"It is a scary world we elderly people live in. It is scary to think about what can happen to our savings and property if we get seriously ill and have to spend much time in a hospital. If we insure ourselves to cover everything that could happen to us - the sperm to the worm idea - then we have nothing left with which to enjoy our later years. It gets down to one basic fact - hospitals charge too damned much for what they give us. "Oh, I know that they have to buy mur derously expensive equipment that could save a life and that the cost of such equipment must be spread across t h e h o s p i t a l * s bookkeeping. But what if a patient cannot af ford it and what if the patient doesn't have anything but Medicare? See if you can answer that one with any common sense." -- Marcus M. A. We all know that Medicare cannot cover all of the expenses of a long and serious illness that reauires maximum hospital care. And we know that while hospital charges may be realistic to the hospital accountants, they are mostly so large that they sometimes have the effect of con fiscating the property and savings of elders who have Medicare. A hospital room is a place where the humans who are confined there become equally im- V 1 posed upon; a place where all patients get equally expensive care, where the price for the beds in a four-bed room is more than some or all of the four can affdrd, where the same aspirin gum that retails for 45 cents at the comer pharmacy is served and put on the bill at $1.50 and where, if you don't have hospital insurance but enough in the bank to gracefully write a check for what you owe, you are made to feel like a nut. As my grandfather said from his hospital bed shortly before; he died after an accident: "Stay away from lawyers and hospitals, if you possibly can." . From the thousands of letters that have come HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE across my desk in the last four years, and from my personal ex perience with health care and taxes through the long years of my life, I deeply feel, in my guts and in my brain, that the health care situation in the U.S. is screwed up. I cannot afford to be sick. Hardly anybody else can afford it either. My doctor told me of a doctor in Los Angeles PAGE 23 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8.1982 who does only hernias, damentally entitled to don't do so well when he He gets a minimum of $2,000 for one hernia operation. He does 15 of them a week. At $2,000. each that is $1,500,000 a year for the good doctor. It is immoral and ob scene to make a million and a half a year on hernias. Any person past 65 who has paid taxes all his life, who has con tributed to the com- munitv. is fun- medical care that can afford. Q. "You had a mighty fine article on hearing difficulties and hearing aids. I agree with everything you said. I have a hearing aid for my right ear. I try to sit right up against the wall with my right ear next to it. IMrat's when my hearingr aid works best." -- Mary L. A. Some hearing aids too close to a wall. They squeal. So, if you try Mary's idea, don't be mad if it doesn't work the way you hoped. A.
