DECEMBER 8.1982 iMcnsH Legal Notice ON SHOPPING SPREE-Jay HiUer and Sherri Weber were among youngsters who were greeted by Santa last Saturday afternoon when the Montlni Parents association held its annual Santa's Secret Shop. The children had the experience of buying their Christmas gifts "secretly" for family and friends. This year many handmade crafts were also included, as well as Christmas ornaments, stocking siuffers and other novelty items to help brighten Chrisimas. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD United Way On Road To Goal Pledges to the 1982 United Way of McHenry County campaign have reached $57,871, 32 percent of the |180,000 campaign goal. * Campaign Chairman Ron Russell, Crystal Lake, reported, "Although our campaign still trails last year's Results at this stage of the campaign by nearly $1,500, we are consistently narrowing the wide gap in giving which appeared early in the cam paign. We are receiving contributions from many individuals and em ployers, who have 'never before participated in the United Way effort, and a number of our established accounts are achieving record giving levels, despite our difficult economy." "Employees of the Youth Service bureau, Woodstock, a United way funded agency, have increased their level of giving 115 percent over last year, to in excess of $55 per person. Contributions from educational in stitutions throughout McHenry county have reached a new record total of $10,581," said Russell, j According to Russell, "Other bright spots are beginning to 'appear in our campaign, evidencing the great willingness of people to help their neighbors in need. Our. direct mail campaign, aimed at individuals who do not have the opportunity to support United Way where they work, will most likely set a new giving record this year. Several hundred people have sent us amounts ranging from $1 to $100. Additionally, area physicians have increased their support of United Way this year in response to the leadership of division chairman, Dr. Steve Rochell, Crystal Lake." JOY TO THE WORLD: The words of this carol were written in 1719 by Isaac Watts who never intended them to appply to any special part of the year. Over a hundred years later, in 1830, Lowell Mason arranged the music for this carol, using portions of Handel's Messiah. WHEN WAS CHRIST'S REAL BIRTH DAY? Most Bible scholars conclude that December 25 is most certainly not the time when the Savious was born. The tradition of celebrating Christ's birth on December 25 seems to have come from Rome in the 4th century of the Christian ear. Though the actual day of Christ's birth is not know, the Town of Btethlehem still sits on a hill just outside the City of Jerusalem. If we were to go to Bethlehem today, we would stoop low to enter an opening said to be the place where the l&by Jesus was born. The Church of Nativity is built over this site and beautiful Christmas bells hang in its belfry. The most important point about the Christmas celebration is not necessarily the day, but the fact that He was born, and lived among us making this world a better place for us as we reflect upon His love and pass iton to other, and p: tare for the place He has gone to prepare for us where peace and love will reign. inow that Thanksgiving has come and gone it is time for FISH to evaluate the "Thanksgiving Baskets" drive. It demanded carefyl planning, a tremendous amount of effort, and much generosity. Because this was given wholeheartedly by so many in our community, it was a beautiful success. Joan Bauer has organized this effort for many years. She and Shiela Grant were responsible for the smooth ef ficiency of this large operation. Bertha Stange plots the deliveries, arranging for drivers to have stops conveniently near one another. This becomes very complicated as ad ditional baskets are added to the list. These women work tirelessly and with contagious enthusiasm. And they were joined by many other volun teers! A large group gathered in St. Patrick's hall Sunday, Nov. 21, busily stacking groceries, filling baskets to overflowing with all the traditional holiday foods, five pounds of cheese, turkey, canned foods,- etc. etc., to last more than the holiday itself. Strong boys helped to carry the heavy boxes and drivers came to deliver. And the generosity was un believable. Gifts of food poured in - home-canned, homegrown, paper products, produce, frozen meat, cleaning materials, candy, gum and baby food. Wonderful! People sent money - checks both large and small. Teenagers fasted to earn a large amount of money for FISH. Chrucbes took up collections, organizations gave benefits. The proceeds were surprisingly large. And so the drive was a great suc cess. FISH had planned on filling 76 Thanksgiving baskets. Because of this generosity, we were able to send out well over 100, to families ranging in size from one to 16 members. If sharing makes for happiness, and we are convinced it does, there must have been many, many happy Thanksgiving days in McHenry.
