RATED PG I l < l \ l PAC.F. 4 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8,1982 EARL WALSH So I Hear Former McHenryite, 91 year old Mrs. Art Shober, returned from Tucson to visit her family and sent us some old time items of interest. Photo copies of the original and new Dietz's Stables of Ivanhoe, ads and menus date back to 1934. The original barn, built in 1876 and converted to a restaurant in 1927, was destroyed by fire. It is puzzling to read, "Rebuilt and reopened June 30, 1934, after being destroyed by fire June 23, 1934." They worked fast in those days! The menu interested me. T-bone steak dinner $1.00, % fried chicken 75 cents, choice of plate lunches, 25, 35 and 50 cents. A mixed drink was 30 cents. Draft beer - light or dark, 10 cents. Sodas or sundaes were 15 cents. If you wanted to splurge, you could get a banana sDlit for 30 cents. - Those were the good old days -- good if you had a dollar. That was in the midst of the big depression when jobs and money were scarcer than hens' teeth. One thing scarcer than hens' teeth these days is a clerk in some shopping center stores. A doozy of a letter came from Hawaii to recognize my birthday. Part of the address on the envelope read "at the top of Green St. in the shadow of and at the footsteps of the Irish Parish, God's Country" The sender of the letter arrived in Hawaii in time to see the results of the big storm that knocked out electricity and played havoc with all operations. When I said to Alvina, "That letter has to come from none other than Wilbert Hecht", she wondered if he was in Hawaii. "Knowing Wilbert", says. I, "he may be on the moon by the time the letter arrived." Reading some of my old time ramblings, Art Martin recalled that if you wanted to call on a neighbor, you watched until they shook the table cloth out the back door and knew they had finished their dinner. Another sure sign, Art, was if the housewife stood on the back stoop and threw out the dishwater. Angie Freund remembers those days when the front parlor was shut off during cold winter months and there was no' heat in the upstairs bedrooms. Ernie told a whopper afbout his breath freezing in those upstairs, rooms. It isn't any whopper, Ernie, when I tell about sleeping in a side room on the farm. A small pane of glass was broken so rags were stuffed in to keep the cold out. One morning when the 5 o'clock call came to get up, I found the rags had blown out and there was snow on the foot of the bed. Think we should send Marie Corso in to see her pal George Halas to let him know some thoughts of the fans. Hilary Rodenkirch. a good man, passed away suddenly and too young. Without being lengthy, I will just say what I heard so many say, "He was a nice fellow". Frank Wagner of Mundelein told of a fellow who didn't believe in snowmobiles. He advised, "Get in your pickup truck, roll down the windows, then drive for five miles and you will get the same effect/' I am trying to find some history on McHenry's one time "Clover Dryer" building and operation. I remember about 60 years ago when Bert Parks owned the building. The late L. V. Adams later pur chased it.-and made it into apart ments. Joe Moerschbaecher (that's not Gaelic) liked our column last week where the readers wrote. Maybe that's the secret to a good column. Just saw a good looking girl on TV model a garb marked 20 percent off. To my aging eyes the percentage seemed much too low. Another ad lets us know there is a difference between eating and dining. I know. I eat out and dine at home at the kitchen table. We hear a lot these days about FISH, the organization for helping others. FISH started out as a minnow and has grown into a whale. A great oraganization, it is-- That big pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall last Sunday was a huge success. Curtis Bremer was all smiles. It seemed he had a lot of willing workers, both men and women, pitching in to help. As you know, it was for a good cause. When Larry Booster followed us in the door, I figured it was one time when he would sit down and be served. Not Larry. He tied an apron around his waist and went to work. nee roit 4-H News 1 BUSY BEARS The Busy Bears, 4-H club will be working on the recycling drive with the McHenry County Defenders Dec. 18 at West campus on Crystal Lake road. A REMEMBERED GIFT "Well, if you want to get a Christ mas gift someone will always remember-get a CHEAP one!" MCHENRY SHORES Nino Keen 344-2665 Assure Proper Water Drainage With all our recent wet weather, it is imperative that we all remember to make sure our culverts and ditches in front of our homes are clear of built up piles of leaves, rocks and gravel; so as to assure proper drainage. Clogged culverts can result in flooded yards, driveways and water improperly running off into the streets. Please take a minute next time you're outside to make sure the culverts and ditches in front of your house are clear of any debris. Make sure you keep your eyes and ears open to see and hear for Santa's arrival on your street! CHRISTMAS BRIGHT "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" is exactly the way t6 describe the lights and decorations we've already seen up here in the Shores. How beautiful! Of course, it is kind of confusing to be looking at decorated trees and houses through the rain, with thunder and lightning In the background. Ah, but remember Christmas is but a state of mind! • Enjoy, and God bless, till next time.
