gifts for the men in your life PAOB» -'PLAJNDEAfcER »• WEDNESDAY /DECEMBER 15,1982 "Olir most exotic item is a handcrafted sterling silver concha belt by designer Barry Kieselstein-Cord." he says "It sells for $6,500. It that seems a little extravagant, one recommend fashion from Wilkes Bash ford*, win ner of a Cutty Sark creative retailing award for the San Francisco apparel store bear ing his name. of the most elegant gifts is a tie of the finest pure silk. " And. of course, a finishing touch to any menswear gift is to enclose with it a package of the holiday spirits symbolized by these fashion awards. Today's man is more qual ity-conscious than ever, so his fashion gifts should be select ed for longevity and versatil ity. This is the collective opin ion of the top names in men's fashioqii this year's designer- winners of the prestigious Cutty Sa'rk Men's Fashion Awards. They agree that in difficult economic times there should be no room in a man's ward robe for garments with a short lifespan Quality menswear can last up to 10 years and longer, they say, and it can also serve several functions. For example, Jhane Barnes, to whom the nation's fashion press voted this year's Cutt^ Sark Award as top U.S. mens wear designer, has designed a versatile new jacket with longer lapels that give it two lives -- as a sportcoat with the lapels lurried down or as a more casual jacket when they 're turned up to reveal the knit trim at the neck. Ms. Barnes also recom mends another gift-buying convenience that this jacket features -- sizing in small, medium and lafge. so the giver doesn't need to know exact sizes. Nino Cerruti, winner of this year's Cutty Sark Award as outstanding international designer, advises that most European labels fit more snugly than American men prefer. He. therefore, creates his American lines with a special fit that is a bit roomier than the more body-oriented silhouette accepted by Europeans Nancy Knox, ^ inner of the Cutty Award for accessories and men s furnishings, has an innovative idea. "Instead of the easy and expected mens wear, surprise him with shoes, specifically the soft, unconstructed footwear that presents no great problem in size selection." Her Pacer shoe, for exam ple, in either soft suede or smooth leather, is bottomed with pure gum rubber for plenty of bounce to the ounce, and it comes in festive three- color combinations. The almost universal appeal of leather brought the styles of Andrew Fezzatothe fore. But for this holiday season the winner of the Cutty Sark "most promising designer" award has added woven and knitted sweaters in wool and alpaca with a new twist -- the stripe patterns are different in every neater. -- For the man who has everv- I For Your Party Needs... •Glassware •Punch Bowls •Chafing Dishes •Extra Tables & Chairs •Coffee Urns (100 Cup) J Plus other "party helpers" to help you entertain large groups!
