Are you one of that number? Have you been chair- bound for some time? Is it possible for you to "get back in shape"? If you can move at all, you can tone up your muscles and improve your cardiovascular system. The secret is in finding a form of physical activity that you enjoy doing, because that greatly increases your chances of sticking with it. Regular exercise enables you to carry out your daily duties and responsibilities and have enough vigor left over to enjoy social and recreational interests. It helps you be more independent; it helps you to meet unusual or emergency situations. As we age, strength does decrease, but the rate of decline can be slowed by keeping the muscles toned through regular exercise. A benefit of exercise for the older person is that it helps maintain the sense of balance. Yet another benefit is flexibility. The aging process and disuse of muscles cause the tissues surrounding the joints to thicken and lose their elasticity. Exercise can delay this process, too. Almost everyone enjoys walking, and it is a form «f exercise r e c o m m e n d e d f o r everyone, regardless of age. A short walk may not exercise your heart, lungs and muscles very much at a time, but the cummulative effect of exercise will produce change. A number of short walks in the course of a day can add up to . a fair-sized amount/of motion. Warm-up exercises are recommended before walking, though. They can prevent charley-horses or hamstrung muscles in the back of your knee. To stretch your calf muscles, put the toes of one foot near a wall and the other foot flat on the floor, about a foot-and- a-half away. Push against the wall with your palms. Another good warm-up exercise is to lift one leg back ward, clasp your ankle gently and pull your lower leg against the back of your thigh. The hamstring stretch is done by elevating one leg in front of you and resting the back of your foot on a waist-high support Then bend your toes toward your body. If you cannot raise your leg that high, raise it as high as you comfortably can. Hold on to something to keep your balance if necessary. Do these warm-up stretches three or four times at first, then gradually build up to eight or 10 times for each exercise If you have been inactive for a lon^Ume^)u^ma^not PUNCINELLO'S Seminary Avenue, Woodstock, IL.. 60098. Continue to walk the same number of blocks at least three days a week, but gradually increase your speed Then begin to stretch your distance so that you are eventually able to cover a mile in 15 to 20 minutes. - If you become breathless, slow down or stop altogether. You don't need to get to the breathless stage in order for your exercise to be beneficial to your cardiovascular and muscular system. It's debatable as to whether exercise will keep you alive longer, but keeping active will make your life-for whatever length of time you do live-much more enjoyable. ALEXANDER LIMBER CO.
