And there probably is no bigger food- associated holiday than Christmas. We all have traditional foods we serve for Christmas dinner, and between gift shopping trips, we spend hours on end preparing special candies and cookies to give to friends, neighbors, teachers, etc. These personally made treats in dicate that we have given lovingly of our time, but there must be something we can give besides fudge and divinity. We should begin new traditions and come up with alter native gift ideas that are appealing, attractive, and nutritious all at the same time. The following are some ideas that may help you plan some nutritious gift ideas. Most of them are economical and, with a little creativity and recycled tins, jars, bottles, or decanters, can make a nice gift. 1) Breads, rolls, or muffins wrapped in a towel and given in a basket or on a bread board. 2) Cheese or herb flavored popcorn or cereal snack mixes given in a decorative tin. 3) Make your own fruit baskets, cheese baskets, or cheeseballs since they will probably be less expensive than pre-packaged ones. 4) Homemade croutons in a decorative glass decanter. 5) Buy loose decaffeinated tea and make a spiced tea mixture by adding spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg to the tea. 6) Share home-canned foods such as soups, vegetables, fruits, spaghetti sauce, or stews and dress up the jar. 7) For a shut-in friend or person living alone, prepare individual frozen entrees for them to store in the freezer for future use. 8) Prepare powdered dry mixes (which only require liquid to be ad ded) for hot chocolate, biscuits, breads, or pancakes. 9) Herb and spice sets or seeds-plants in windowsill pots along with a book on their use in food preparation. Herbs and spices can replace high calorie sauces and salt. 10) Nuts, seeds, and dried fruit mixes \n a decorated tin. 11) A collection of your favorite nutritious recipes. By using imagination, new gift ideas can be created which are more nutritious. One of the nicest ways of sharing love during thi£ over- commercialized Christmas season is giving a personally made gift. And if the gift is also nutritious, it shows we care that much more. Everyone was reminded that non- perishable food items and paper goods could be brought to any of the officers' homes for prompt delivery to FISH. Santa arrived with ringing bells and received a royal welcome from the ladies. He distributed the grab bag gifts; also the secret pal presents; and from the ohs and ahs, it seems as if everyone was very pleased with the gifts. Of course, Santa insisted on a kiss before surrendering the gifts, and demanded to know whether or not everyone had been good all year. It was a nice party and fortunately the weather was good.
