T&eWaves Marshal Merlin muses JOIN US FOR TK£ HOLIDAYS ! By Peter Meade Merlin Olsen is the prototypical example that there is life after football. The fprmer Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle is still racking 6p honors with the regularity he did during his 15- year playing career. The NFL Hall of Famer will be the Grand Marshal for the Rose Bowl Parade, airing New Year's Day on both NBC and CBS. Olsen is especially proud of this distinction because he can share it with his wife Susan, teen-aged daughters Kel ly and Jill and 9-year old son Nathan, all of whom will ride with him in the lead car. - When Olsen received a call last September from a San Marino, Calif, neighbor, Thornton H. Hamlin Jr, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, he assumed it was about his upcoming third consecutive Rose Bowl football broadcast. Instead, Olsen will be the fourth sports figure to be hon ored in the parade's history. After the parade, he'll be flown by helicopter to the NBC broadcast booth where hie'll join Dick Enberg for coverage of the 1983 Rose Bowl game between UCLA and Michigan. However, other things haven't always worked out so smoothly for Olsen. His Tuesday night NBC series, "Father Murphy," will be canceled at mid-season. "It's a shame because there just are not enough shows on television that the whole family can watch," says Olsen. "But now I'll Sit back and see what's available. . Offers have already started filtering in." As much as he wouldn't mind getting involved in anoth er series, he is also looking to work in both theatrical and TV-movies. Olsen made his acting debut in the 1969 mov ie "The Undefeated" with John Wayne and Rock Hudson. "I met the film's director at a party," Olsen explains. "He said he needed someone to make John Wayne look small. He psked me, 'Have you done any acting?' I'd nev er thought about it. I asked him, 'Is it fun?' He said,-'Yes.' 'Doesn't It pay much?' I asked. He said, 'Yes.' Then I knew it was sounded like something I'd like to do. I did it as a lark."' Olsen always had vision beyond the football field. He originally thought he'd play only two or three years and even when his playing days continued, he still took time to solidify his post-playing days business plans. "When I started in football," says Olsen, "A good butcher could make as much as a pro football player. Now kids out of college can make $250,000 (playing football). They get real comfortable and (when their playing days are over) the transition to the real world is brutal. I see reaL tragedies q,head, athletes can't cope and it's getting tougher. l{ pro football is the only thing in your life, it's easy to lie lo yourself." „lf iV, @1#82 Compoloo ̂ WARSAW INN O N S R O U T E 3 1 I N M c H E N R Y "A Delicious Polish-American Smorgasbord" Everyday House Specials Roast Beef, Baked Ham, Fried Chicken, Fresh Polish Sausage Potato Pancakes, Pierogis, Blintzes, Soup. 12 Salads 12 Desserts and much, much more LUNCH: T U E S D A Y - F R I D A Y 1 1 : 3 0 - 2 : 3 0 DINNER: T U E S D A Y - T H U R S D A Y 4 : 0 0 - 9 : 0 0 F R I D A Y A N D S A T U R D A Y 4 0 0 - i n n n S U N D A Y A N D H O L I D A Y S - N O O N b : U 0 FOR RESERVATIONS, PLEASE CALL 344-0330 C L O S E D M O N D A Y THURSDAY, DEC. 30 (D MOVIE: 'Devil and Miss Jon**' A department store owner poses as a worker to investigate tabor troubles.
