But now that the 6-foot-4-ingh actor is playing a good guy -- a television host -- why isn't anybody watching? "I wish viewers would give us a chance." says Palance, of his ABC show "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" "They're still watching '60 Minutes.' That show is one, two or three each week in the ratings. Our show did well as a series of specials and should be a good program for children. It certainly is educational, but we're in a thankless spot." Despite the show's paltry ratings, the Sunday night series was recently renewed and that brings a smile to Palance's toughly sculptured face. He has really gotten into his role -- he met this reporter brandishing two Ripley artifacts; a cane made of animal vertebrae and a necklace braided of human hair. The show has allowed him to maintain his zest for world traveling. He has traveled even more than he expected and while working, he has managed to find new places to fuel his hobby of collecting paintings and sculpture. To seek out "the strange, the unusual and the unexplained" required Palance and supporting host /nar rator Catherine Shirriff to travel all over the globe, includ ing a four-month trek across.Europe, then to the Far East and all across the United States. There is nothing cheap or phony about the production of "Ripley." It's one of the most expensive series on televi sion and all stories have been carefully researched and authenticated by the Board of Directors of Ripley's Inter national Ltd. The show is based on the "Believe It or Not!" cartoon strip, created in 1918 by sports cartoonist Robert L. Ripley. The name of the strip has become a much-uttered phrase while becoming the most widely syndicated infor mation feature in the world. Although he died'in 1949, Ripley's passion for finding life's most bizarre happenings has been perpetuated by his namesake series. Where else could you find a show dedicated to reporting on the world's ugliest dog, a mud-slinging festival in 1 France, flying snakes, the only albino gorilla in captivity, the real-life counterpart of Robinson Crusoe and a Marilyn Monroe robot? As Ripley would say, "Truth is stranger than fiction." (c) 1983 Compulog
