Anlv Re9- Value / F Offer Good Thru A < $4 g January 1983 -MM Only Interesting Warriors Not The Best The Warriors of Ken Ludwig lost a tough one to Downers Grove North in the opening round of the Wheeling Holiday tourney 64-57. The inability to shut off the inside game of the Trojans, along with being out-rebounded, led to the Warrior defeat. As I said before, they are not the best team in the state, but they are interesting to watch play, even though they make a lot of mistakes. They give it all they have for the full thirty two minutes. No one can ask for more from a group of high school lads. Gary Collins, coach of the Crystal Lake Gators, was in attendance at the game. The Warriors play the Gators in Crystal Lake Jan. 7. The popular coach and good friend remarked to me after the Warrior loss, "I have seen the Warriors lose twice this season (Grant game), but they still worry me." He added, "They are 4 and 0 in the conference and they are ahead of us." After a few exchanges, he finally remarked, "We should have a whale of a battle at South in a couple of weeks." That will be a good game, but not the entire season if either team loses the game, according to Ludwig. The Warriors defeated Riverside-Brookfield (Mike Shanahan's old school) on Tuesday afternoon. Regional assignments are in order with the Warriors, the Crystal Lake schools, Woodstock and Cary-Grove all playing in the Crystal Lake tourney. Jacobs, along with Lake Zurich and Wauconda, play with Barrington at their regional. Dundee, Crown, along with Elgin and Larkin play in teh Crown regional. The winner of the South regional goes to Loves Park (Harlem) with the winners of the Freeport, Round Lake and Rockford Guilford winners. The super sectional will be held at the new Rockford Metro Center. Of local interest in Class A, the Skyhawks of Johnsburg will host a regional with Harvard, Hebron, Marengo, North Boone, Richmond- Burton, North Snore Country Day and Marian Central. On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt This should be a good tourney for local fans and you can bet Principle Rob Gough and Jim Meyers the athletic director will put on a good tournament. I just hope they have a good seat for me in the gym during the tourney. Just for you fans information and chit-chat during the coming months, there are 392 class A schools and 245 class AA schools with 63 schools from the Chicago Public League in the girls division. In the boys division there, there are 488 schools in class A and 426 class AA with 62 schools from the Chicago Public League. Our sports editor, Mike gave me the opportunity (his demands) to use the computer typewriter in the Plaindealer office on the story of the Warrior-Downers Grove game Monday evening. Any mistakes please blame the computer. It was quite an experience, late at night and my old R.C. Allen aidn't appreciate my using another typewriter. I along with all Warrior fans wish the coaching staff of all our teams the best for 1983, hoping you get the bigger, faster athletes and all have a winning season along with a enjoyable Happy New Year. Down memory lane we go back to the North Suburban season of 1955-56. The Warriors defeated Warren of Gurnee in overtime 62-61. John Huff of the Warriors led the locals with 16 points in a most thrilling victory. Wauconda led 15-11 after one quarter, 32-15 at halftime and 46-34 after three periods. The Bulldogs' Joe Yacano led all scorers with 31 points, while Bob Conner paced Huntley with 15. Northern Illinois Classic Hampshire managed to shut down Jacobs' normally hot-shooting Tom Schafer, but teammate Brian Mekush stepped in to score 28 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a 65-57 victory over host Hampshire for Northern Illinois Classic cham pionship Wednesday. The victory was Jacobs' 12th straight, boosting their record 13-1 on the season. However, Eagle coach Ken Slimko wasn't exactly overjoyed with his team's performance in the tourney finale. In an earlier meeting bet ween the two teams Jacobs routed Hampshire by 36 points. "We've improved 200 percent in 30 days," said Hampshire coach Jim Root. The Whip-purs suprised the Eagles by jumping to an early 8-2 lead. But Jacobs recovered and claimed an 18- 13 lead by the end of the opening quarter. The Eagles managed to keep that lead through the remainder of the contest, but Hampshire clung close behind, trailing by as little as three points at during in the third and fourth quarters. Defense was the key for the Whip- purs as the contained Schafer, the tourney's most valuable player, to a season-low 14 points. "It was a good thing that Brian Mekush got back in the game," said Slimko. "He saved it for us in the end." Chris Baine put in 13 points for the Eagles as all-tournament player Dale Tegtman led Hampshire with 26 points. Belvidere on third-pplace honors by defeating conference rival Hononegah, 91-64, while Kaneland won the consolation bracket with a 49- 34 victory over Burlington Central. Harlem Girls Tournament Harvard's girls made a tremendous second-half comeback after falling behind to DeKalb by 16 points, but time ran out on the Hornets, forcing them to accept a 47-46 loss in the consolation championship of the 16- team Loves Park-Harlem girls tournament. DeKalb reeled off 10 straight early third quarter points to go ahead 33-17, by the Hornets outscored the Barbs 10- 2 to cut the deficit 35-27 going into the fourth quarter. Judy Pollock tied the game at 46 apiece with 30 seconds left with a pair of pressure free throws. But DeKalb's Amy Crum sank the front end of a bonus with four seconds left to ice the win. The 6-3 Hornets defeated Rockford Auburn 44-32 Wednesday morning to advance to the consolation finals. Romeoville took the Harlem title with a 50-39 triumph over Naperville Central while Forreston blasted Rockford Boylan 69-49 for third place. Stillman Valley Wrestling STILLMAN VALLEY -- Harvard became the first team in the seven- year history of the Stillman Valley 16- team tournament to successfully defend its title. The Hornets came home Wed nesday night with two individual champions, a pair of runners-up and two third-place finishers enroute to 136.5 team points to second-place Sterling Newman's 126. Hornet 185-pounder David Holt- freter pinned all three of his foes for his second title in two weeks. Tour nament coaches honored him as the outstanding wrestler of the two-day meet. "This is something that is above my wildest dreams," Harvard coach Dick Holtfreter said after his team clinched the Stillman Valley title for the second time. Tim Linhart, 167 pounds, recouped on his sixth-place finish in the Har vard tournament to win the 167-pound title. -- • Ken Sorensen, 98, and Jeff Putnam, 132, were defeated in their cham pionship matches for second place. Dan Muehl, 105, and Mark Hage, 112, wrestled back for thrid-place titles. Muehl, a Harvard tournament champion, lost his first match of the season. Holtfreter reamins the only un defeated Hornet. He has pinned all but two of his 16 opponents. I Cheerleader I From McHenry Lora Baldwin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Craig F. Baldwin, has been selected as a Bradley University cheerleader.
