PAGE 16 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 7,1983 EBBB <3, U7LCS OoU FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 5, 1933). Four youths, about 17 years old, pupils in Woodstock high school, and come of highly respected parents in the county seat, were arrested by authorities and have confessed to robbing more than a dozen homes in that city. From Bacon's Strip: "The McHenry Faculty Five will play their first game of the season at Harvard. McCracken, Orr and Schoenholtz will represent the teachers and the deal with Janitor Joe, Harrison and Patzke filling in Thomas may also get a hand in the pudding and will handle the center assignment if called upon. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 7, 1943) An accident which caused severe damage occurred when an unex pected customer paid a visit to the Bridge ballroom, making his entrance in a milk truck. Shortly before, an accident occurred when Stanely Brown, driving his milk truck, collided with a passenger car driven by John J. Barnings of Burton's Bridge. TJje first accident occurred at the very"dangerous corner at the east side of the new bridge. The truck was driven east across the bridge and the passenger car was beirtg driven south on Fox street and was in the process of turning onto the bridge. The two machines collided and then the truck kept on for about 150 feet before it crashed into the front of the tavern. Miss Lorraine Schaefer entertained several friends at her home on Main street in honor of her birthday. An eight o'clock supper was served and the evening spent in dancing. Present besides the guest of honor were Lorraine Kurth, Esther Althoff, Lucille Weingart, Richard Williai Robert Adams,. Erwin Laures and Harry Ferwerda. WE FEATURE A FULL LINE OF: TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 2, 1958). As residents in the north part of the city and parts of Lakeland Park were preparing for# Christmas eve ob servances in their homes, they were interrupted for varying lengths of time due to a power shut-off. Affected were residents of Riverside drive, most other sections in the north part of the city and a portion of Lakeland Park. Public Service employees were notified of the interruption of service at 5:24 o'clock and began their search for the trouble shortage. They found that failure to a fuse on a high tension line near the Park and Pearl street intersection was responsible. Carolyn Bauer represented the McHenry school system in attending the Illinois Education association's 104th annual meeting in Illinois State Normal university in Normal. The convention was the closing event in the celebration of the centennial year of the university as a teacher education institution. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 3, 1973). The editors of Johns burg Junior high school, Dean Andreas, Lance Toepper and Keith Besserud, were the first students ever permitted to watch a live NBC news broadcast from behind the cameras at WMAQ studio in Chicago recently. They received a VIP tour of NBC facilities and talked witfi several newscasters. Following thp NBC evening news, the three jtyftsBurg^Stolents were invited into the office of John Palmer, where they had an opportunity to interview him and his colleague, Jorie Lueloff. With the start of the new year, the McHenry Police department has engaged in Operation Identification, a program designed to thwart the sale of stolen property. The local police entered into the program through encouragement of the Sheriff's department and has 20 machines to offer on a loan basis, geared to foil thieves. Wonder Lake Floodplain Residents To Meet Jan. 18 Ancient peoples used the cubit as a unit of length. It equaled the distance from a man's elbow to the tip of his middle finger. The Division of Water Resources of the Illinois Department of Tran sportation urges all residents of the Wonder Lake floodplain to attend a public meeting on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Wonder Lake village^all. A representative from the Federal Emergency Management agency will explain the National Flood Insurance Program and its impact on the community. Included in the flood insurance study are the most recent maps and other data delineating the floodplain areas where the National Flood Insurance Program rules ap ply. Preliminary draft copies of the study are currently available at the Village hall for review by the public. The study and the maps will be thoroughly explained at the meeting and everyone will have a chance to comment on them. The National Flood Insurance Program provides federally sub sidized flood insurance to residents provided that the village board enacts regulations that control future con struction in the floodplain. Federal law requires applicants for mor tgages, home improvement loans, or other property-related loans in a floodplain, to purchase a flood in surance policy. Since the National Flood Insurance Program affects insurance, construction, and loans, the Division of Water Resources suggests that insurance ^agents, contractors, land developers, bankers and realtors, as well as residents, attend this public, meeting. The play was written in 1978 by Ernest Thompson and adapted for the screen by the same man. "On Golden Pond" received many award nominations with Hepburn and Fonda each receiving academy awards for their performances. This extraordinary story that confronts three generations deserves an extraordinary setting, as shown by the thrust stage and cut-down set. The audience will be within two feet of the actors. The audience will be sitting in chairs set upon the stage on three sides of the set, and many will have the advantage of being able to feel what the characters are feeling. Anyone who can relate to the hard ships of being old, has tried to reconcile a family relationship, or is trying to find a purpose in life, is in vited to see this tear-jerker (whether from laughing or crying). Tickets may be reserved in advance by contacting the West campus main office at 385-7077, or they may be purchased from cast or crew mem bers in advance, or at the door. r V fr "Fools and wise mdn are equally harmless.
