"Baldpate" is the only melodrama written by George M. Cohan, and as such, the farce is replete with Cohan corn. The adorable heroine is Mary, after Cohan s adored wife, and the villainess is Myra, same name with the vowels transDOsed. In 1913. the tumultuous action unravelled to sneering lines like "I'm the schoolteacher now ". One can almost see Jimmy Cagney shooting from the hip and lip with the fast- paced dialogue. While pure Cohan, the main story is up to date, and a refreshing tonic to winter doldrums; indeed, one of the lesser themes of the story provides the final twist to the action. Cohan himself injects his attitude towards his wprk into the protagonist's lines: he doesn't know what the critics will like, but he knows what the people will buy. In "Seven Keys to Baldpate", pulp novelist William Hollowell Magee arrives at Baldpate Inn, a summer resort, frozen and empty in snowy winter. Will Kepper of McHenry plays the author, braving low temperatures to spend 24 hours trying to win a bet he made with the Inn's owner in New York. In one day, Magee must produce a 10,000-word manuscript or lose $5,000? He counts on lonely Baldpate, sitting on a mountain in Asquewan Falls, for inspiration Keppercaused audiences to tremble as Bill Sykes in last Fall's "Oliver". His sweetheart in that story, the doomed Nancy; < Debbie Grennan, Crystal Lake) appears opposite Magee in a more idealistic relationship as Mary Norton, Brenda Star of the local big city newspaper, oh hand to investigate goings-on at Baldpate Inn. Guy Wendland of Holiday Hills appears as Bland, a millionaire's friend, making a deposit into Bald- pate's safe. Wendland was Paravicini in last winter's "The Mousetrap". ; From that same cast, James Meisel here appears as Cargan, crooked mayor of Reuton. Karen Wells (McHenry) will be Mrs Rhodes, Cargan's fiancee, and Mary Norton's landlady, who complicates the plot trying to discover Cargan's true character. Lous Max gets mixed up with the wrong kind of woman in Myra Thornhill < Elise Dawson, Wonder Lake). Thornhill poses as the wife of-, r a i l r o a d P r e s i d e n t H a y d e n , t r y i n g t o . - turn the tables on all her pals. « The owner of Baldpate Inn is*) represented by Gerald Schmelcher. a„ teacher from Wonder Lake.
