Publish Student Article The following story was written by Jerry Lubben, a student at Harrison school, Wonder Lake, and appears in the January issue of Illinois History magazine: This is a publication for teens sponsored by the Illinois State Historical society. Civil War Drills and Skills At first glance, the line of marching troops with their shouldered muskets appears to be a Civil War regiment positioning themselves for battle. A closer look reveals the sneakered feet and young faces of the members of the Harrison Rifles Drill team. These junior high school students are not only learning about Illinois history during the Civil War, but actually living it. The student soliders are involved in a unique experience of drill, practice, and performance as a precision military unit. This nov^Drill team is based on the Illinois infantry regiments that fought in the Civil War. "I got the idea for the Drill team after seeing enactments of Civil War battles by reactivated regiments at an encampment in Lincoln, Illinois," said the Drill team's founder and advisor, Fred Reed. The students volunteer for the team and practice once a week after school. Team members have no previous drill knowledge. However, they are able to learn the most basic manual of arms routine, advancing to complex maneuvers. To add historic authenticity, Drill team members are equipped with homemade replicas of muskets. They wear jackets of Union blue, fight blue trousers, and lcepi caps similar to those of the Illinois Units. Bars of ranks, scarves, lanyard cords, and medals add final touches of realism. The only hints of modern dress are the shoes. Ranks for the student members range from second lieutenant to lieutenant colonel. Rankings are achieved for performance, attendance, and attitude. Mr. Reed is the commanding officer. Student squad leaders teach their squads the drills. The f irst drill learned is Parade drill, which is used to teach the troops basic formation for discipline. It is also used when the commander inspects the squad. Another, the Palm Arms drill, contains movements which insure that the line is kept straight and firm. It is also used to show off the efficiency of the unit before the commanding officer. The Staggered Line drill is used to move the regiment into battle line for a quick defensive position. Pivot the Line drill is utilized when the unit moves from the column to the line to meet the impact of an enemy charge. The last and mo6t important drill, Battle drill, teaches student soldiers how to advance and fire in a volley. If performed correctly, it gives a view of how an enemy would be dealt with in battle. The Harrison Rifles Drill team has had many opportunities to perform The first public performance was given for the audience of the 1981 Northeast Regional History Fair held at Harrison school. Next the team marched in the Wonder Lake Memorial day parade. In July the unit's members attended an all- day, old-fashioned community Fourth of July picnic at Harvard. The audience s enthusiastic applause expressed their interest and regard for the team's efforts.Other engagements include the McHenry high school homecoming, the Union memorial day encampment, and the Woodstock Daughters of the American Revolution February Conclave. The Harrison Rifles is a fine example of youth in action for both fun and education. The Civil war is now an event to be studied in the history books. Yet when the Harrison Rifles show their drills and skills, for a short time, the sacrifice of Illinois' troops is memorialized. 5: SUNNYSIDE AREA Betty Mess^r 344-2494 $ * I Invite Children To Story Hour Come to the Johnsburg District Library Pre-school Story Hour.
