Skyhawks Coach Nancy Fahey said Harvard pressed her team the whole game. "The biggest thing is our of fense. They are not shooting the ball. We only had five attempts at the basket." Coach Ludwig said after the game, "We lost to a good team. They are 10 and 4 playing in a tough league along with a strong holiday tourney schedule." However, the Warrior coach added, "We could have won last night at South, and tonight,- but when the chips were down, we just didn't respond." In Saturday night's game, the Vikings found the opening they wanted and countered with a few important points. Their winning streak was short lived, however, as the Harvard Hornets brought the Skyhawks new start to an abrupt halt downing the 'Hawks 68-61 on Saturday night. The Skyhawks conference record improves to 1-4, while their overall record nears the .500 mark at 4-6. , The Skyhawks eager to start fresh in conference action got off on the right foot in the first half against' Round Lake. The 'Hawks took the lead early in the first quarter and by half- time had shown their command of the game with a 12 point lead. But the strength of the Skyhawks was tested when the Panthers; with the assistance of Terry Cheeks, Ramlow and Wilbright; who began the third quarter by bucketing six consecutive unanswered baskets to tie the game. Skyhawk Coach Ben Beck explained what happened to the Skyhawks. "The Panthers opened the third quarter out scoring us two to one. They switched their defense from a zone to man-Uvx^ man. Cheeks would get the ball, woric it inside and score." 0 Despite the fourth quarter effort made by Wilbright who sunk eight points on several free-throw op portunities, the intensity of the Skyhawks prevailed. "I was very proud of the way the guys hung together," said Beck. "They held tight on some close (referees) calls and kept control to win the game." It was an obvious total team effort by the Skyhawks who had four players in double figures. Leading the scorers was Jeff Preston with 14 points, while Jeff Fowler added 12 points and Jim Leon and Tom Meehan each 10 points for the night. Leon and Fowler also aided their teammates by each having six assists. The Johnsburg-Harvard game was another story, as the Skyhawks ap peared to be lacking a drive. Beck agreed that several Skyhawks were not playing up to their potential. "Harvard is a top caliber class A school. They have a record of 10-2 and to defeat them you have to play your very best. But we just didn't possess the game intensity to defeat them." Harvard keyed into the Skyhawks weakness and bounded to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter. Shooting an out standing 57 percent average from the floor, while the Skyhawks only managed to "shoot 25 percent with difficulty. , By the end of the second quarter the Skyhawks had pulled themselves back into the game by making use of several free-throw opportunties and by becoming aggressive when going after needed rebounds. But it was still the Harvard defense. "I can't take anything away from the Harvard defense. They are tough and Har vard's Tim Anderson and Craig Carlson who slipped into the lane unguarded for the easy lay-ups. The 'Hawks threatened in the fourth quarter when with just under five minutes reamining, the Skyhawks narrowed the Hornets , lead to five points, 48-43. But Harvard's Peter Dawson on a pass from Anderson | went up for the basket and received the bonus shot when Johnsburg was charged with a foul. Dawson's extra point gave the Hornets just what they needed to blow away all of the, . Skyhawks chances to make a ' comeback. , , Beck did see a bright spot in the Harvard game. "I was quite pleased H with Jeff Jayko, Joe Majercik . Greg . Sobiesk and Brian Siudak who all came off the bench and played with, intensity. ^ "If I can pull this kind of effort from ' my other five starters, it would really be solidify the team." ti( Majercik and Sobiesk were im-, • portant in establishing consistent, . rebounding efforts for the Skyhawks, while Tom Meehan led with 16, Jeff. , Preston with 11, while Majercik and '. Meehan each added 10 points. The Skyhawks will host the Nor- !' thwest Militat-y Academy in non- conference action at home on Tuesday • night. Their next conference com- petition will also be at home against Grant Friday night. 7 Scoreboard Wrestling \ Richmond Now Known For Fastest Pin 16 points. MIKE LAMB RICHMOND -- Richmond is no longer just known for its antique shops. The small northern community is where the fastest pin in the state of Illinois and in the country took place. Junior varsity wrestler, Paul Vogel, pinned Adam Forbes of the Northwest Military Academy in six seconds during the 112 pound match last Wednesday with the academy and V^ley Lutheran. He broke the old suite record of seven seconds held By Paul Severson of Valley Lutheran. The pin mark aslo tied the national mark, but still must be made official. The record breaking per- formace by Vogel has been one of the few bright spots for Rich mond coach, John Vayo. His Rocket team is struggling this season. "The team is doing awful, but we have some individuals who are having a good season." Vogel leads the individuals with good seasons. So far, the second-year wrestler has ac cumulated 15 victories without a loss. A total of 11 of those vic tories have been ties and only gave up nine points in the other four matches. Last season, his first ever, Vogel experienced a 19-8-1 record wrestling at both 105 and 112 pounds. He just missed reaching the state meet. / Although ^/Vogels's ac- complishperits don't surprise Vayo, hjs record breaking pin did because it went so fast he missed it "I'm not surprised with anything he does," said Vayo. "The only reason why I knew it was a record was because the coach from Valley Lutheran had a boy (Forbes) who set the record at seven seconds." Vayo was fortunate, however, that he videotapes all the home matches and the pin was con- viently filmed. That was probably enough proof the record was broken as the film was re played during many of Chicago's television newscasts. Vogel said he didn't use any special technique to gain a fast pin. "I was just going to pin him as fast as I could. I used a cowcatcher (underhook) move and put him on his back. I didn't even know what the record was. "I just go out and try to win every match and that's about it." Vogel's pin wasn't the only fast pin recorded by the Rockets. Bob Kinsch pinned his Northwest Military Academy opponent in nine seconds. That gives the impression that Vayo teaches some kind of technique to gain fast pins, but he says no. "It happens very infreauently." And it happened in Richmond.
