PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19.1983 --EARL WALSH So I Hear Highlight of the past week was a delayed birthday dinner. The treat was on "Brenda" in honor of my last birthday in November. We had it in writing so we relaxed and gave her time to save her money so she could pick up the check. Alvina and Marie Yegge rounded out the foursome. Three girls! It drew some comments from friends in the restaurant. Nothing could deter my appetite as I enjoyed every bite. something prompted me to remark that the next treat would be on me. Me and my big mouth! It was great fun to be out with the girls and celebrate my birthday all over again. Joe Schmitt called at our home with the neatest scrap book you could imagine. The contents of the book covers a long period of years when Joe was the bus driver, maintenance engineer and man of the hour at MCHS. - Since I laid into prime rib, Interesting items were found in _ i We could help you win the Hawaiian Honeymoon of your dreams! We have been through the book. Now will go through it again. Joe let us know Alvina and I were pictured in the book -- way back in the 20'S. <-- Just saw a TV ad that may change the whole world. Jt is a computer you place before you at the dining table. You can press buttons and be in formed of the number of calories in every bite you take. That's not for me. OLD SAYING: *. When some young sprout criticized an older person, the retort was -- "Wait until you harrow what I have plowed." Now we are getting some place. The card says to send money for a special gift we have won. That may be a great idea for Christmas. Advise your friends to send money and you will send a gift. I can't shake the reports on birds. Readers keep asking, "How are you getting along with your birds?" We get along fine as long as I keep dishing up food for those feathered friends. And those squirrels! They eat like pigs. Marilyn Reihansperger lets me know how plentiful the cardinals are in their yard. We do well to get one to pay us a visit every few days. Our suspicions are that Kenny Diedrich stuffs those cardinals so full they haven't the pep to fly over to our back forty. There must be a lot of interest and enthusiasm concerning our area's new hospital. We attended a dinner last week where 300 workers responded to an invitation to assist in putting the drive over the toff^" Hospitals are great {daces when you need them. People have their favorite hospitals. I like the idea of having a high class health center near home. We had the experience in our family of needing a hospital right now. It was wonderful to be only a few blocks away from help. Some patients complain about the food in hospitals, mostly because the food is cold when it arrives. Maybe that has changed. I have been confined to several hospitals in my life and managed to get enough nourishment. Never expected Gome cooking. A stay in 4 hospital will never scare me as long as the nurses are friendly. At this point, Hank Hiller phoned to let you know the following baseball personalities will be present for the big Johnsburg Old Timers Club Baseball dinner:, Bill Campbell of the Cubs, Kevin Hickey Of the Sox, and the ever amusing Dutch Reinhart, big league umpire. Of course, Vince Lloyd will be the MC. It wouldn't be a program without Vince. From down Florida way, Vernon Knox sent the following. Have also been waiting for a book he mentioned sending. Would like to give full credit if I knew who put this together: A PALINDROME is not a friend who lives in the Eternal City. Rather, it is a word, a phrase or a sentence that reads the sarmTforward or backward. Every sixth grfeder knows Adam 's supposed introduction to Eve - "Madam, I'm Adam," - but that's just for beginners. Your palindrome collection should start with a phrase credited to Napoleon, after his exile: "Able was I ere I saw Elba." From there, you will want to devise your own puzzling palindromes. For inspiration, try these collected by Willard R. Espy for his bpok. The Game of Words. "Sums are not set as a test on Erasmus." "Never odd or even." "Step on no pets." And "Dennis and Edna sinned.' Offer Black Walnut Trees The National Arbor day foundation is giving three free Black Walnut trees to all new foundation members joining during January, 1983. The free trees, which are part of the foun dation's effort to promote tree planting throughout America, will be shipped at the approbate time for planting this spring. Black Walnut trees were chosen for this campaign because of their value and versatility, according to the foundation. The Walnut trees bear sweet, edible nuts, and they are also used for shade trees, growing to 80-100 feet. Walnut hardwood is very valuable for making furniture and cabinets. The National Arbor day foundation, a non-profit organization, is working to improve the quality of life throughout the country by en couraging tree planting. The foun dation will give three free Walnut trees to new members contributing $10 or more during January. The trees will be three to four feet tall and will be sent postage paid with enclosed planting instructions. They are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free by the foundation. To become a member of the foun dation, and to receive the free trees, a membership contribution should be sent to Free Walnut Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, Arbor Lodge 100, Nebraska City, Nebr., 68410, by Jan. 31. AVOID WINTER SUN HAZARDS Whether you're having a ball tossing snowballs, or snowplowing down a ski slope, you and your family can avoid the hazards of winter sun by following these sensible tips from the experts: Be aware that in high altitude, the thinner atmosphere can make sun exposure riskier than summer sun. By applying a waterproof, moisturizing sunscreen you can protect your skin from the winter sun and keep it healthy. Protecting your skin from winter sun by using a sunscreen may help prevent premature aging and skin cancer. A sunscreen can help save your skin in winter as well as sum mer. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Janaury 12 1933) Among the wooded hills of Bull Valley on a warm, "sunlit slope," is one of the oldest and most rugged of structures in this vicinity known as the Jackman house, or to older residents as the Stickney home. It stands like an old English castle among the gigantic oaks with an air of mystery surrounding its unique - structure and rounded corners where 'tis said, spirits lurked and made their home in the large circular building. Old landmarks, like old friends, lose their usefulness and pass away, although remaining memories of olden days and the changing events of intervening years. Such has been the case during the past week when the old building known as the Bonslett building situated at the creek bridge on Green street, has been razed by the present owner, Julius Keg. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 14, 1943) With regret mingled with a feeling of profound pleasure, the entire community, and especially the parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic church, heard of the departure in the near future of Rev. Paul Tuchlinsky. For on Jan. 22 he will leave for Rock- ford where he will act as chaplain at St. Anthony's hospital and also serve as pastor at Davis Junction, which is 14 miles from Rockford. One of McHenry's fine institutions, which receives little publicity, is her library. Although small, it has a vast number of interesting books and magazines for the use and enjoyment of the general public. A short time ago, the McHenry City council favored a proposal to establish some means of aiding the library. Ac cording to their plans |m ap propriation ordinance and tax levy will probably be made next summerf but funds will not be realized from this until a year from then. v TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 9, 1958) A new projection based on present enrollment in McHenry schools has been completed by Supt. C.H. Duker and reveals anticipated growth which might well provide food for thought for every person in the community. One of the most startling bits of in formation to come out of the projection picture is the almost certainty that by 1965 there will be at least 1,660 students in the local high school. T" TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 12, 1973) Robert L. Weber, who has served the public in local banking institutions for more than 50 years, was elected ^ president of the McHenry State bank at the annual meeting of the board of directors and stockholders. He fills the vacancy created by the recent death of Gerald Carey. The only filing to date for a city office in the spring election is James Wegener of 1503 Freund, McHenry. He seeks the aldermanic post now held by Raymond L. Smith. Three Warrior cheerleaders not only cheered the McHenry Warriors to a second place finish in the Kankakee holiday tournament, they also won the cheerleaders' champion trophy as they were voted the out standing cheerleaders of the 16 competing teams. Members of the team are Jayne McMillan, iVicki Petersen and Kolleen Carroll. NOW ICELANDJUR MAKES MORE OF EUROPE MORE AFFORDABLE.
