The Hurricanes wasted no time, building a 20-12 lead at the quarter and 36-34 at the half. Marian hit and almost unheard of 77 percent of their shots in the first half. The Sky hawks, not to be denied, narrowed the nine points in the third and went on to chop it three with a minute left fourth period. However, Johnsberg faltered in the ensuing 30 seconds, missing three shots and a free throw. They cut the Hurricane lead to two in the final 30 seconds, but three free throws by Chuck Hartlieb insured a Marian vie- torv. Skyhawk coach, Ben Beck, said adjustments made by his team was the reason for the strong second half surge. "We did some things? we had to do. We went to the boards strong and did some things defensively. I told out kids at halftime three things. One, go to the boards, relax and play." The Bulldogs waisted little time in establishing their superiority, jumping off to a 21-5 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs are now 3-2 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and Johnsburg dropped to 1-5. A disappointed Beck wasn't very talkative after the game. Most of his answers were one or two words. But, he did manage to say his team just got beat. "I just don't think we were patient with the basketball. The game just speaks for itself." The Skyhwaks were beat in just about every category there can be counted. The big categories were rebounding, free throw shooting and turnovers. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Skyhawks 30-18 and committed only nine turnovers to the Skyhawks 15. i The biggest category was probably free throw shooting. The Bulldogs had 40 chances on the free thcrw line and made 33 for 82 percent. Johnsburg, mean­ while, only had 28 chances and made 2Q for 71 percent. The Scots overall record drops to 1- 9, while their conference record sinks to 0-4, continuing to hold them at the bottom of the Skyway Conference. Oh Tuesday, the Scots traveled to Egin Community College to take on the Spartans and lost 83-56. Thursday, Lake County College pounded the Scots 108-53. The Scots remained in range of the Spartans throughout the first half, going to the locker room only 10 points behind 40-30. However, despite the excellent defensive effort by the Scots,,<»who normally lack a strong defense, Elgin opened the 10 point gap into an unreachable margin. Elgin's Troy Thompson led the Spartan's with 30 points making use of many stolen passes from the Scots offense and the loss of MCC's Mark Wilkinson who injured his ankle early in the first half. ^oach Bruce Harbecke was pleased ritb the Scots. The quickness of the Lake County players appeared to break the capability of the Scots offensive drive Thursday. Lake County took an early lead, ending the half with a commanding 50- 19 lead. The second half was no im­ provement, as Lake County surpassed the century mark with five minutes still remaining in the game. Again, the rebounding department of the Scots was broken down. Lake County out-manned the boards two-to- one, pulling down 60 rebounds, while MCC only managed to grab 39. Harbecke felt his team just wasn't ready to play Thursday night. "We didn't hustle like we needed to. We were definitely out-manned by a much more talented Lake County team. "I know we will struggle to compete against this caliber team all year."
