Well, it is possible to add a solar greenhouse or "sun space" to your home to enjoy not only extra space, but savings of as much as 30 percent on heating bills as well. Sun space room additions are becoming popular around the country. The design of these solar rooms developed from the traditional greenhouse concept - an airy space enclosed with glass. Some sun spaces, however, are built with wooden roofs and walls and could be mistaken for a conventional family room if it weren't for their large, slanted windows that face the south. Recognition For Knox Snapshot A picture, taken by Ralph B. Knox, Jr., 2525 ShadeTree blvd., Green Bay, , Wis., a former resident of McHenry, won a Certificate of Merit in the 1982 "Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards (KINSA). Nearly 1,000 photographs represented winners of local summer contests conducted by 181 newspapers in the United States, Canada and Mexico with more than 385,000 en tries. Knox, a pharmacist, is represented by a color picture of his son, Eric, who was ring bearer at a friend's wedding. It was a winner in the Green Bay Press-Gazette's summer snapshot contest and as such was submitted ot the international competition. Just like a parked car on a sunny day, a sun space will collect heat. Light passes through the window glass, heats objects inside, but can not easily escape through the glass. The "greenhouse effect" occurs when heat becomes trapped inside. There are many different types of sun spaces available and prices vary considerably. A professional can be extremely useful in helping to determine the design that will save you the most on your heating bills. The decision on what kind to buy will also depend on your particular home, budget, current fuel bills, and how the added space will be used. The McHenry County Board of Realtors suggests you could consider adding a. sun space to your home if you're looking for an attractive, unique room addition that can also save you money. PIONEERS MEET The Kishwaukee Life Member club of the Telephone Pioneers of America will hold its monthly Feb. 9, starting at 11:30 a.m. at Warsaw Inn, Rt. 31, McHenry. That the transcends nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free en terprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in the human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. Anyone who would like to find out more about the McHenry Area Jaycees may call the president of the chapter, Bill Cross, at 385-4094. With heating costs on the rise, do-it- yourselfers are not satisfied just to decorate a room so it "looks" warm and inviting. Now the object is to combine beauty with practicality. Today's wood or coal burning space units not only add to the warm ap pearance of a room, but also help keep it warm at reasonable cost. They're featured by hardware stores which, today, sell a lot more than the nuts and bolts of home repair. HOME FIRE PROTECTION Fires in your home can be prevented. In fact, a recent govern ment study led U.S. fire authorities ta say that as rriany as 3,000 home fire fatalities a year could be avoided if people would use preventive measures. Here\ is a basic c h e c k l i s t f o r fireproofing your home: - - K e e p n o n - combustible ashtrays in all rooms and carefully dispose of glowing matches and cigarettes. -Keep matches in metal containers away from heat and children. --Make sure smoke detectors are placed in several locations and are in working order. --Almost all materials used in home fur nishings are flammable. About 80 percent of all home furnishing fires are started by smoldering cigarettes. All mattresses made in the U.S. are required to pass a Consumer Product Safety Com mission ignition test, and the flexible polyurethane foam in your mat. ress passes this test. - - K e e p y o u r basement, storerooms and attic free from rubbish, oily rags and old papers, reminds the Pplyurethane Foam Association. --Avoid running electric cord^under rugs and over nails and hooks, and keep all lamp and appliance cordis in good condition. -Make sure you warn everyone in your family against smoking in bed.
