Sometimes it is a neighbor, sometimes a relative or sometimes a friend who gets under a guy's skin. One fellow told me about another who thinks he has to have thfe last word and his last word is final. "His side of the story is always the right side," said our troubled soul. I advised the fellow not to try to change the smart one, but to match him up with a free-talking female when the opportunity arises. That could be a mismatch. Then I told the fellow the old joke about the family which left Ireland. The parents and one son settled in Boston. The other son went to Chicago. Two years later while visiting his son in Chicago, the father died. The tragedy was telegraphed to the son in Boston. The grief stricken reply was, "What were father's last words?" Back went a wire, "Father had no last words. Mother was with him to the end." Maybe the fellow was only one in a thousand who hadn't heard the joke, but it took his mind off his troubles. Usually after the first of the year we expect cold weather, then look for a January thaw. *. This year we waited for the January freeze. We're gettin' it! We have had an artificial Christmas tree the last few years so have been finding a real one after the holidays to put out in our back yard. This year when our new neighbors, Ben and Molly Beck, tossed out their tree, we put it in our back yard and awaited snow which hasn't arrived. Our little trick has been to plunk the tree into a bank of snow, hang some food in it and let the birds think a new shelter has sprouted up. The tree is still out back and the snow is up there some place. I just have to write another letter. I am again having former studnets call on me. I am sure that you would be interested to hear what they tell me. My mother, egged on by a couple of smart sisters, forced me take the subject. „ „ Before you arrived on the McHenry High scene, Lora Kinney taught Latin. At least she tried to teach it to me. She found it a losing fight, then gave me an underserved class grade to get my credit. Here's the punch line. After giving me a passing grade, she advised me not to take the subject the next year.
