The Warrior boys' basketball team travels to Algonquin to take on the Jacobs Golden Eagles, who are in first place in the FVC with a 6-0 record. McHenry, meanwhile, is 5-1 and a win would move the Warriors back into first place with Jacobs In fact, the Warriors could tightened the FVC race with a three way~tie, if Crystal Lake South wins their game against Central The game gets underway at 8 p.m. at the Jacobs Fieldhouse. The big break for the Warriors are the two key injuries on the Jacobs squad. Tom Schafer, the FVC leading scorer with a 27.3 scoring average, is suffering a bruise tail bone injury. Ken Slimco, coach of Jacobs, says Schafer will play against^ McHenry, but won't be 100 percent. * Q The other injury was suffered by their second leading scorer, Brian McKush. The 6-foot-2 forward has a torn muscle in his back and won't be able to play tonight, according to Slim'ko. Ken Ludwig, the McHenry . coach, says the absence of McKush will hurt the Golden Eagles. "He is a good thinker -- he's like the quarterback on the floor." said Ludwig. "It will hurt them a little bit and he will be missed. It will be hard to replace him." Slimco agreed with Ludwig, "He is the glue that keeps us together." „ Ludwig is curious who will start in the place of McKush, but Slimco said he wasn't sure who would replace him in the vacant •forward spot. Slimco said he is stiU looking at four seniors candidates for the job and hasn't made a decision. Ludwig. however, says he doens't fully believe McKush won't play and will prepare likewise. "We are going to prepare like we always have, just like he was going to play." The other concern of Ludwig is containing 6-foot-7 Schafer. Not too many clubs have been able to contain him and Ludwig doesn't expect his team to fully contain him either. "We are going to concentrate on Schafer. but I think the secret will be to contain the other four kids," said Ludwig. "We are going to try in keep a fresh player on him all the time and try to ware him down. But he is going to get his points." The rest of the Jacobs lineup is intact. Bob Nergard at 6-foot-2, Bob Spella at 5-foot-10, Joe Majecki at 5-foot-9 and the Baine twins (Chris and Chuck) at 6-foot- 5 provide the Eagles with plenty of strength as shown in their record. The Warriors have always given Jacobs a rough time since the infancy of the FVC. Slimco is very aware of that and has a great deal of respect for the Warriors this season. • "We always have a tough time against the Warriors. I just don't trust my good friend Ken Ludwig. I'm just glad we are playing at home. You know we have never beaten the Warriors at McHenry." Both coaches agree that another key in the ballgame will be the play of the guards. * "A key is if their guards can handle our pressure. If we don't put enough pressure on them, were going to have a tough time with them," said Ludwig. Slimco added, "To be in the ballgame, we have to handle their full court pressure. We have to contain (Mike) Bauml, (Randy) Lively 'and (Gary) Freund." The guard play of Mike Bauml could be a vital part in the Warrior game against Jacobs for first place in the Fox Valley Conference. Marian Pins Skyhawks For Eighth Straight Win 2nd Half Collapse Leats To Hawk Loss To Panthers Despite the loss. Don March, coach of the Skyhawks. was pleased with his wrestler's performaces. "Even though we got beat, the score didn't indicate how close the score really was." said March. , "Mike Hurckes got a pin. He is not really a pinner, but he got one."' Johnsburg then rallied for a pair of victories at the 138- and 145-pound classes. The Skyhawks' Mike Hur ckes pinned Marian's Tony Remke in 3:22 and Bob McKay clipped Matt Carzoli, 20-4. Marian's upper four weightmen, however, put the finishing touches on the victory. Kevin Niedospial recorded the night's fastest pin as he defeated John Biederman in :21 at 155 pounds. John Nebel pinned Mark Dumelle in 5:00 at 167 pounds. At 185, Tony Piwowarczyk needed only : 32 to stop Tom Buccelli and Rich Kelley beat the Skyhawks' John Grenman in 2:58. SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE WOODSTOCK--Recording pins in the final four weight divisions, the Marian Catholic Central wrestling ' team improved its record to 8-0 with a 44-i6 win over Johnsburg here Tuesday night. "We had-beaten them earlier in the year by a pretty close scorfe so we expected another real tough one," Marian coach Mike Garvey said. "But this friendly little rivalry brings out the best in both teams. We were really geared up for this one." Johnsburgs' Guy Bazelwich won the night's opening match with "a 16-2 decision over Kevin Huff in the 98- pound class. Marian then won the next five matches in a row as Mark Wohnrade defeated Scott Lehman, 28- 5, at 105 pounds; Kevin McConville edged Dave Heisma, 9-5, at 112 pounds; Jeff Nusbaum defeated Joel Rowland, 10-5, at 119 pounds, .Mike Herff stopped Mike Cahill, 12-7, at 126 pounds', and Steve Stilling pinned Dale Zalke in 4:39. scoring -- Donna Nichols and Lori Yankee. That was the answer given by Johnsburg Skyhawk girls basketball coachpvNancy Fahey, for her teams' cbmplete collapse in the second half against the Round Lake Panthers. The Skyhawks fresh three game winning streak was stopped by the Panthers 48-33 Tuesday night. The Skyhawks were coming off winning the Johnsburg Girls Basketball Tournament over the weekend. Johnsburg is now 0-3 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 3-6 overall. "I could use the fact we are tired from the weekend, but I won't make that excuse," said Fahey. "That's the schedule and we have to accept it." The first half of the game was very competive as it ended in a 19-19 tie. The Skyhawks jumped off to a 6-2 lead, but the Panthers came back and tied ft up at six. Johnsburg again took the lead and went into the second quarter with a 11-8 lead. Jane Pecucci scored six of her eight .points in that period for Johnsburg. The score was tied four times in the second quarter. Lori Edenhofer of the Panthers tied the game at 18 with a basket and then gave her team the lead with one free throw. Kathy Butler tied the score at 19 with a free throw. The third quarter was the difference - of the game, as the Panthers out- scored the Skyhawks 17-4. The Panthers used a full court press and it seemed to bother the Skyhawks. "In the first half we broke their press, but didn't score," said Fahey. "We didn't take advantage of the two on three and three on four situations." Fahey went on to explained that her team just couldn't find the open player and just couldn't make the adjustment of moving the ball up court in the second half. Joan 'Pierce and Theresa Hauck scored the only baksets in the third quarter. The Skyhawks showed a little more offense in the fourth quarter, but couldn't make up the difference made in the third quarter. Round Lake still outscored Johnsburg, 12-10. The 'Hawks made a run of five straight points late in the game. Two players scored 13 points for Round Lake to lead in the Panthers in For his team to win, Beck said they will have to improve in executing offensively and defensively. Beck also announced that Larry Zuley is still recuperating from an injury due to a car ac- \-- Size against quickness. That will be the matchup when Johnsburg travels to Lake Zurich to take on the Bears in a Nor thwest Suburban Conference battle tonight. The Bears have the height and Johnsburg the quickness. It is a classic game where who ever makes the best of their strengths, will win. The Skyhawks take on the Bears with a 1-5 record in the NWSC and a 6-8 overall record. Lake Zurich is 3-2 in the con ference and 7-7 overall. "I have seen Johnsburg once this season," said John Nesheim, coach of Lake Zurich. "We will have the heighth advantage over them. The key will be to get it inside and they will try to prevent us from getting it inside. The Bears are led by 6-foot-5 center, Gordie Green, who is the recently to play football for the University of Illinois. The senior end caught 43 passes the last two football seasons. Johnsburg coach, Ben Beck, called Green a good player who can do a lot of things well. "We are going to put some pressure on them," Beck said. "We will try to match up man-to-man and put pressure on their guards." One of the guards the Skyhawks will have to put pressure on to win, will be Brett Ricci. He is the Bears second leading scorer with a 13.2 scoring average. Beck said he expects the Bears to play somewhat of a slowdown game, but Nesheim says his team has speeded up their tempgs since the last time he saw the Bears play. Nesheim expects a fast tempo game, but he indicted , his team will have to be careful with the Skyhawks. "They are very scrappy. We can't let them force us into making turnovers. If we get the ball to the inside man, we will have a pretty good chance of winning," said Nesheim. He added the Skyhawks are "good shooters." cident and will won't play against the Bears. Jeff Preston is also still ailing. He has been sick the last two weeks. He played agianst Grant Tuesday and Beck expects him to play tonight.
