Warrior Grapplers Edged Three Times PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 26. 198:t It's bad enough the McHenry Warrior wrestling team lost their eighth straight wrestling match, but losing three matches over the weekend by a total of 12 points can be hard to take. The first Warrior loss came to Jacobs, 26-24 on Friday. The following two losses were suffered to Lake Zurich 36-33 and Belvidere 37-30 on Saturday. The Warrior overall record dropped to 4-11. "We really thought we had a good shotat winning two of the three," said Marty Sobczak , coach of the Warriors. The Warriors were slowed a bit by a forfeit at 98 pounds at each match. Regular 98 pounder Russ Bunday is out with an ear injury. The Warriors were also hurt by other injuries and Sobzcak had to fill a few of the weight classes with underclassmen. "That 98 pound spot being open really hurt us," said Sobczak. "Wrestling underclassmen, you just can't be too confident. We just match up as well as we could and let the chips fall as they may." One underclassman did help the Warrior cause considerably. Freshman Tom Wrona, who was filling in for Erick Gaza at 112 pounds, picked up three wins. He defeated Easley of Jacobs 10-2 and pinned Jason Meyers of Belvidere at 2:57. His third win came by forfeit during the Lake Zurich match. Sobzcak said the freshman did a real nice job. Besides Wrona, three wins were also scored by Bbb Sarabia at 126 pounds. He defeated Peshek of Jacobs 6-2, pinned Glenn SchweaJs of Lake Zurich and gained a forfeit in the Belvidere match. Sarabia now holds one of best varsity record at 14-8. Mike Love, wrestling at 132 pounds, added tv/o wins and a tie to his record, now 15-7-1. Love tied with Letza of Jacobs 6-6, Tom Marschewski of Lake Zurich 5-1 and pinned Dave Hane of Belvidere with six seconds left in the match. Double winners over the weekend were John Keevil at 105 pounds and Bob Hawley at 155 pounds. Keevil picked up a forfeit against Jacobs and pinned Richard Roman of Belvidere at 1:56. Hawley also gained one forfiet (Lake Zurich) and pinned Gabrys of Jacobs. Adding one pin each to their records were Ric Connor at 119 pounds and Dan Mohnen at unlimited. Connor pinned Dave Scarano of Lake Zurich at 1:47 and Mohnen pinned pinned Jeff Meinhansew, also of Lake Zurich at 1:48. Continuing on their winning streak, the freshmen squad rolled over Jacobs 54-16. The junior varsity lost 40-26. STAFF PHOTOS -- WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Swimmers Lose To Dundee ^ Dundee captured the first two places in the 100 yard backstroke and went on to defeat the McHenry Warrior swimming team 68-69 Thursday. It was the Warriors fourth loss in five dual meets. Warriors swimming coach, Mike Shanahan said the results could have been different. "It was a close meet. Dundee took one and two in the backstroke. If it wouldn't have been for that, we might have beaten them." Rich Miller led the Warrior swimmers with two first place finishes. He started the meet with a first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.1. His second first came in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:45.0. Williams was first in the 400 yard freestyle at 3:57.3. The Warrior 400 freestyle relay team of Williams, Greg Karzynski, Miller and Cepulis took first place also. Wall Of Fame To Be Dedicated The Johnsburg High School Athletic Wall of Fame will be didicated during a halftime ceremony at the varsity basketball game against Grayslake on Friday. Johnsburg High School and the Athletic Booster Club have been working on this project during the past several months. There are several features involved with the Wall of Fame. Pictures of athletes and teams that have met the standards of excellence established when the school first opened is the first feature. The second is placques for each sport honoring the most valuable athletes and scholar athletes. A trophy case and a dedication placque to Bill Haag Jr. are the last features. Haag was a former dean at Johnsburg High school who was tragically killed in a boating accident last summer. The "Wall" is located directly inside the south entrance of the school. 'Hawk Forfeits Result In Loss The Johnsburg Skyhawk wrestling team gave up 30 points to Lake Zurich on three forfeits, but still battled back and only lost 40-21 Friday. The loss, however, dropped the Skyhawk Northwest ^Suburban Con ference mark to 0-6. The Skyhawks suffered forfeits at 145, 167 and 185 pound matches. Johnsburg did manage to pick up points on a Lake Zurich forfeit at 126 pounds and Mike Cahill picked up the win. The only Johnsburg pin was earned by John Grenman at n 10 against Jeff Meinshaisna. Other Skyhawk wins were reorded by Dave I^aisma at 112 pounds, Joe Roeland at 119 pounds and Mike Hurckes of 138 pounds. 'Canes Edge Matmion But Lose To Montini M WOODSTOCK--Marian Central Catholic split its weekend games at it defeated Marmian, 61-53, on Friday but lost Saturday to Montini, 78-51. Friday night, four starters scored in double figures as the Hurricanes jumped to a 15-6 first-quarter lead and were never seriously threatened after that. Sophomore guard Andy Hartlieb led the way for the winner with 17 points while Chuck Hartlieb and Mark Thompson each tallied 14. Gary Tonyan added 13 for MCC. Marian outscored Marmian, 17-11, in the second quarter to take a 32-17 lead at halftime. They led 46-33 at the end of three quarters led by Andy Hartlieb's 10 p6ints. T1 e balanced Marian attack overshadowed a fine individual performance by Marmian's Placido Perez. Perez, a transfer student playing in his first game for Marmian, scored 23 points. Eighteen of those points came in the second half and 12 of those were in the fourth-quarter. The edge in the game, however, was at the free throw line. Marmian had more baskets than Marian (25-24) >but the Hurricanes made 13 of 25 free throws compared to just 3 of 4 for Marmian. Saturday night, Montini outscored Marian, 49-28, in the second and third quarters combined to record the victory. Monlini led, 14-10, after one quarter but e>{)ploded in the middle two periods to lead 63-38 entering the fourth stanza. Thompson paced the Hurricane scoring effort with 12 points. Chuck Hartlieb and Tonyan added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Rovansek lead the way for the winners with 19 points including 12 in the second quarter Poor shooting was Marian's downfall as they connected on just 19- of-50 shots for a meager 38 percent The weekend split leaves the Hurricanes with a 7-10 overall record.
