Ken Creed, naturalist and cinematographer, explores these remote areas using dog-sleds, air planes, and kayaks in "Wild and Wonderful Alaska", and second in this year's series of three Audbon Wildlife films. The film will be shown at the Woodstock Opera House Sunday, Feb. 20. at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Opera House ticket office in ad vance, or just before the program. Alaska is a land of seasonal abundance, followed by scarcity. Along the Chilkat river large con centrations of ef.gles gather to find food. Bears fis'.i beside them, and salmon struggle to the headwaters of their birth. During the summer months, the moose, largest of the deer family, grazes on up to 30 pounds of vegetation per day. In winter, bighorn sheep manage to survive on grass and Junior High Quarterly by Dfcanna Ransdell On Dec.115, Mr. Matta, the band director, gathered together all his young musicians to perform a concert in the McHenry Junior high gym for the enjoyment of parents and family. It was a good way to begin the holidavs. On Dec. 17, the whole school kicked off their shoes to attend a sock-hop. Dec. 20 was Dress-up, Dec. 21 was Jersey day and Social day. Social day consisted of volleyball and ping pong tournaments, along with a dance and just socializing. After all the fun, we had a break for the holidays. School resumed Jan. 3, and we all tried hard to get back to our normal schedules. The sport for this last quarter was boys' basketball. Our .eighth grade team managed to win 3 games an<j lose 6, with our sixth and seventh grade players winning 6 and losing 3. Try-outs for wrestling started this quarter too. Others put on their hats and gloves and went on a ski-trip. All had a good time despite the weather. lichen that is exposed on the high, windy peaks. It is a vast landscape, and Ken Creed reveals the secrets hidden in many of its ecological niches. Creed, a retired construction oexecutive from Atlanta, is a sport sman who has spent many years in the far north. He is an experienced fisherman, sailor, pilot, and naturalist, having skippered his yacht across the Atlantic and throughout the Caribbean, and having logged many hours as a bush pilot. One of Creed's films has been broadcast on the Alaska Public Broadcasting Svstem. He currently spends roughly half the year in his native Georgia, and the other half in Alaska. This is the fifth year that these films from the National Audubon society have been presented by the McHenry County Audubon society, the McHenry County Defenders, and the Environmental Education committee of the McHenry County Conservation district. For more information, call the Opera House ticket office at (815) 338-5300. Urge Safety In Mal l Del iver ies As the U.S. Postal Service delivers mail during this winter, the public and postal employees are beirtg en couraged to be "Safety Conscious" during hazardous weather conditions. Postmaster LeRoy M. Smith said that precautionary safety measures taken by the public and postal em ployees will aid in the movement of mail and "more important, help reduce employee injuries during the winter months." Approximately 5,200 letter carriers in the central region were injured last year due to hazardous walking con ditions during the inclement weather periods. "However,", he added, "Through cooperation on the part of our customers, this task will be much easier to accomplish." The slide rule was invented by English mathematician William Outred in the 1600s. "Talk not of wasted affection; af fection never was wasted." Longfellow FOB RENT FOR RENT 1100 SQ. FT.
