Minimum Competency Tests Start In Fall SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 11,1983 The District 156 board of education recently approved the Minimum Competency model developed by the district's Competency committee. This new program will go into effect with the freshmen entering school in the fall of 1983. Work on this model began in 1979 when a staff committee surveyed the community and teachers and found a strong desire for a program to insure specific standards of attainment in the basic skills areas. As developed, the students will be tested in three competency areas: reading, language arts, and mathematics. All freshmen will be required to take these tests during the first nine weeks of the school year. / Students passing the test would be certified as having attained minimum competencies in basic skills. A student who does not pass all three tests would only have to re-take the test(s) which that student failed. Each student will be given at least one opportunity each year to re-take the minimum competency tests. Students who pass the test battery will have a note imprinted on their transcript certifying the areas of minimum competency that they have attained. The idea in having early testing is to provide students with ample op portunity to remediate deficiencies they might have. Those students who have been staffed into Special Education and whose Individualized Educational program states that they are not capable ot successful completion of the minimum competency tests will be exempted from taking them. 5F When it comes to improving your woodworking, ONE DEMONSTRATION IS IN REHEARSAL - Members of the cast, Pam Guardi as Pat and Yvonne Alton of McHenry as Lee, rehearse a scene from the American Repertory Theatre Systems dinner-theatre production of "Accommodations", directed by Barbara D. Fight Palsy A fund has been established for eight-year-old Rhonda Fisher, a former Wonder Lake resident now living in Harvard, who is stricken with a severe form of cerebral palsy. The fund, at the First State Bank of Harvard, was started earlier this year to help finance a therapy program for Rhonda, for which she must go to Philadelphia, Pa. Her parents, Larry and Mari Fisher, estimated the cost of the trip for the week-long session at about $2,500. Enrollment in the Sandler and Brown Institute, an offshoot of the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential is $750. Last fall, volunteers from the area donated time to help the Fishers establish a home therapy session for Rhonda. The therapy was patterned after a program at the Institute for Human Potential. More than 100 people donated an. hour a week to help with the program in the home of the Fishers. The program is based on the repetition of the same steps on a regular basis. Medical research has shown that impaired children, like Rhonda, can make progress far beyond limits previously thought possible. The Fishers have noticed improvement, particuterty better muscle control, improved ability to grasp and support herself. If enough is raised that Rhonda can go to the program in Philadelphia, she will undergo two days of evaluation. If accepted into the rest of the program, intensive training will follow. If she is not accepted, the fee will be returned. In Harvard, equipment has been set up in the basement of the Fisher home which Rhonda uses to develop muscles to support herself. One device in the program has rungs at the top and five volunteers help Rhonda move from rung to rung. Contributions can be made at the First State Bank of Harvard.
