All The Pressure Will Be On The South Gators PAGE 7 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11.1983 # The Warriors might have one other advantage over the Crystal Lake South Gators when they meet Saturday at Buckner Gym besides the home court advantage according to Ken Ludwig -- no pressure. After losing Tuesday night to Central, the Warriors took themselves outof the FVC title race. South, on the other hand, is right in the thick of it and can't afford even one loss. "We have a good shot,"4 said Ludwig. "We have to comeback after what happen last night. We just want to finish in the top Tour." South is tied for the top spot with Jacobs with a 9-1 record. The Gators have had outstanding success in the FVC since it's infancy with an above .800 winning percentage. The Gators have been especially tough on the Warriors, defeating them seven of the hast nine games. The Warriors defeated South 77-57 in February of 1980 and 61-60 January of 1981. Last January, South beat the Warriors handily, 65-46. The Warriors were 4-0 going into the contest and the loss burst their bubble. South was led by 6-foot-4 Butch Witt who scored 27 points. "We don't plan to make too many changes," said Ludwig on defending against Witt. "Peterson handled him with Babb handling the jumper (6- foot-3 Bob Murphy). We have a hard time matching up against South." Tom Dayton, at 6-foot-2 is the other forward. Ed Kothera and Mike Geske start at the guard positions. Skyhawks Lose Another Conference Heartbreaker Things just gotta the act of shooting, but he missed both ANTIOCH -- change." Losing three straight games by a total of seven points, had Johnsburg Skyhawks Coach Ben .Back making that remark. He had just watched his team lose another heartbreaker, 56-53 to Antioch on Tuesday night. The Skyhawks, sporting a lowly 1-10 Northwest Suburban Conference record, have been losing these heart breakers to the top teams in the conference. Both Warren and Antioch are the top two teams in the NWSC. "When you're winning, things seem to go your way and when you're not winning all the little things just don't go your way," said Beck. Two free throws by Jim Leon with 30 seconds left in the game put the Skyhawks just two down, 53-51. Jeff Fowler then managed to get fouled in free throws. Joe Majercik did manage to score a bucket with seven seconds, but it wasn't enough to win the ballgame. Leon led Skyhawk scoring witn 15 points and Fowler scored 11. The Skyhawks will try to rebound against Round Lake on Saturday. The Skyhawks only conference win came against the Panthers in early January. That game was also a close battle, with Johnsburg on top 61-59. Beck describes the Panthers as a very scrappy team. "Terry Cheeks is playing very good basketball. We will nave to contain him. •c "To ytiti a ball game we have to " execute. During a close ball game we have to make sure we are aggressive. We have to control our own destiny." Coaching Changes Shake District 300 I can't say much about the Woodstock Blue Streak game, as the flu bug put me down for the count last week. I missed my first Warrior- Streak game in 21 years. But from all reports it was a typical Warrior-Streak game. It was a battle down to the wire, with the Warriors on top 67-66. Tuesday night's game with Central was a heartbreaker. You can read about it from Mike Lamb's story. The Warriors shot the eyes out of the bucket in the opening period, hitting on 12 of 16 and still had enough for a 20 of 34 at the intermission. However, with a large lead, the Warriors couldn't put the Tigers away, and the visitors battled back for a 72-69 victory. It was a disappointment to Warrior fans. The Warriors draw a bye in the opening round of the Crystal Lake South regional. Central plays Cary-Grove, with the winner playing the Warriors, South plays Woodstock ana will play the winner of the Warrior game. Bob Carlson, the football coach at Crown the past several years, has been named the football coach at the Crown-Dundee High School for next season. Bob Bejcek, the only coach at Jacobs has been released from his coaching duties. This is all due to the closing of Dundee High School this spring. More coaching changes will be made later this spring, and I'm sure there is a lot of bitter feelings in District 300 due to these changes. There is a lot of coaches with a number of years experience getting the axe. Thought you fans might like to know the records of the Fox Valley Conference basketball during the past four and one-half years of play. AS of last weeks games, Crystal Lake South has a record of 53-13, a winning percentage of .800. Crown is 38-28, Jacobs 36-30, Warriors 35-31. Dundee is even at 33-33, while Central and Woodstock are both 30-36. Cary- Grove brings up the bottom with a 9-57 mark. The "Rassling Warriors" finished sixth in the Fox Valley Conference meet held last week. Bob Sarabia and Mike Love both finished second in their division. The same teams will On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt compete in the regionals at Crown. Let's hope the Warriors have better luck this weekend. Tfife Lady Warriors are still struggling, but at times show signs of greatness. Last week against Jacobs the ball just wouldn't fall in the bucket. One of these days things are going to turn around for Pat Wirtz and his squad. Mike Shanahan's swimmers are on a winning Streak. Getting a couple of divers has helped in the scoring department. Next Tuesday closes out their regular season at home against Elgin Larkin. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m. at West Campus. Sonny Katzenberg and Tom Gerber of Hunter Country Club in Richmond were press row visitors Tuesday night for the Central game. They came out to watch an old friend, Ken Ludwig's team play. They were rooting along with the rest of the Warrior fans for a win ana Sonny remarked after the game, "tell Ken I don't want his job." Sonny coached in Wisconsin for several years, but the bus rides finally got to him. ********* Down memory lane to January 1974, when the Warriors defeated North Chicago in a North Suburban game 63-57. Steve Koerber had a great night scoring 29 points against Del Yarbrough of the Warhawks. Yarbrough went on to play for Illinois State, while Koerber played at Oklahoma City. Yarbrough at this time was considered one of Illinois best flayers, but Koerber took it to him along with the rest of the Warriors. Teams will be assigned in February with games being played mid-March through May 7 for the spring season. Fall season play will begin on Sept. 10 and continue to Nov. 5. Players will remain on the same team for both seasons. The Department of Parks and Recreation will sponsor this youth program and will be assisted by the volunteer parents and coaches that did such an outstanding job in the 1982 fall program. Games will be at A.P. Freund Field for the 6-7 year-old age group. All other games will be played at Knox Park. Practices will be scheduled by the coaches on weekday afternoons or evenings. The registration fee includes the cost of a full uniform for both sessions. Registration will be from Feb. 12 through Feb. 19 at McHenry City Hall on a first come, first serve basis. Age divisions will be determined by child's age as of Nov. 5 as follows: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-15. Skyhawk Lifters (Continued from pog* 6) would like to lift 270 on the bench. I have been lifting for tvyo months regularly, the first month and a half real hard" . * Jerry Harker, a junior tight-end and defensive back, hopes the program will make him more physical. "Last winter I put a lot weight on. I went from 140 to 175 pounds." Obviously, success in powerlifting is measured by how much weight the lifter can manage to push up. Bentz is the only Skyhawk at 300 pounds on the bench press. A total of nine athletes are recorded in the 200 pound club. Each of them received a hat with the words 200 pound weight club on it. Listed are; Thennes, Ken Schoening, Rich Thayer, John Scott, Jerry Harker, Dave Moravec, Harry Walk and Tim Adams. A total of seven have reached the 450 mark on the Hip and leg machine -- John Scott, John Kozicki, John Miskovic, Harker, dave Moravec, Tim Koeller, Bentz, Jim Hopp, Wayne Kollenkark, Scott Tvaroh and Sayanh Bouttaphanh. While the football team is more interesting in powerlifting, other sports might develop their weightlifting program to fulfill their needs, according to Oberembt. "Basketball coach, Ben Beck, has his players do speed lifting. He is real happy with that program. Wrestling, too, has a program and distance runners have a different program from everybody else." Other coaches involved with the program are; Bob Texidore, Mike Roberts and Bill Hurckes. Mike Bauml and Steve Babb have Corky Card of the Tigers no place to go. Babb had one of his best nights as a Warrior, scoring 15 points. The Warriors lost to Crystal Lake Central 72-69. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Antioch Girls Belt Johnsburg, 68-41 ANTIOCH - The Antioch Seqouits girls' basketball team jumped off to a 28-5 first quarter lead and then hung on to defeat Johnsubrg 68-41. The Skyhawk loss is the ninth straight in the Northwest Suburban Conference without a win and they are 3-11 overall. "The first quarter is what killed us," said Nancy Fahey, coach of the Skyhawks. "We stuck with them primarily after the first quarter. We had a lot of turnovers against their press. They have a huge team compared to us. They just leaned over for easy buckets." The Skyhawks were led in scoring by Theresa Hauck and Michele Swartzloff, each with 14.
