It concerns the prehistoric Effigy Mound Culture of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. ,frhe presentation will be made at the Feb. 19 quarterly meeting at the McHenry County Conservation district headquarters on Harts road off Route 3L north of Ringwood. The slide illustrated presentation, which will be fallowed by a question and answer session, will begin at 10 a.m... Dr. Salzer has had an interest in the $ffigy Mound Culture which existed from about 700 to 1300 A.D. for a dumber of years. Beloit college itself i<j the site cf a number of the curiously shaped Effigy Mounds. The mounds can range in shape from bears to birds, panthers, lizards, and turtles, 3mong others. - Dr. Salzer points out that the purpose of these mounds, which are usually no higher than three feet, is as yet unknown to archaeologists. Major concentrations of these mounds can be found at Effigy Mound National Monument across the Mississippi^ riyer from Prairie du Chien, Wis., around Lake Koshkonong near Ft. Atkinson, Wis., and around Sheboygan, Wis. The inability of archaeologists to account for the use of the mounds'by prehistoric Indians was one factor which interested Dr. Salzer in specializing in Effigy Mound Culture investigation. Some experts feel that the mounds were used for burials while others.pointing to the fact that few of the mounds contain burials, see connections with totemic rituals. Dr. Salzer has published a number of preliminary reports on his ex­ cavations and has recently been doing work on a rock shelter in southern Wisconsin which may have been a living site for these prehistoric people. Dr. Salzer has uncovered a very in­ teresting assemblage of stone and ceramic artifacts from his ex­ cavations and will be including slides of his recent discoveries in his presentation. He has even promised to announce an exciting new discovery during his presentation. The public is cordially invited to attend this exciting presentation. Members of the Sauk Trail chapter will also be availabe after the presentation to answer questions from those who are interested in becoming part of the State of Illinois avocational archaeology program. A very small donation will be requested at the door to help defray the expenses of the meeting.
