NICKEL DAY All of our Girl Scout and Brownie troops have been kept busy preparing for Nickel Day to be held this Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Johnsburg Junior high school. Each troop will have games, food and crafts per taining to the state they have chosen to represent and no item will cost more than a nickel or dime. Everyone is invited to attend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. BIRTHDAYS Mike Cominsky had a birthday on Feb. 8, and we had a party to mark the occasion on Sunday, the 6th. Cake, ice cream and coffee were served that afternoon and gifts were opened from grandpa and grandma Cserep, the Koscher family and the Jordan family. While we were celebrating at our house Sharon and Rich Wohlert had a small dinner party for their son Bill in honor of his birthday, also on Feb. 8. May both these young men have all their wishes come true. CORRECTIONS I reported last week that Brownie troop 407 would be putting on a skit at Nickel day. My information was in correct, the girls will be putting on a Sesame Street play sometime in April. I'm also sorry I made Cecilia Serritella two years older than she is; she turned 15 on Valentine's day. GET WELL WISHES There seems to be all kinds of germs in the air over McHenry these days. Everyone we talk to has someone sick at their house. The flu bug seems to be tne nastiest; it doesn't seem to want to leave those unfortunate to catch it. It would be hard to mention all our ailing residents so I wish each of you a speedy recovery. Although about one of every 11 American women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life, results of research have led to r e m a r k a b l e i m provements in a breast c a n c e r p a t i e n t ' s potential for healthy, long-term survival. For example, in 1979, a panel of experts in breast cancer surgery concluded that "total m a s t e c t o m y . w i t h axillary dissection" should be the standard treatment for women with early-stage breast cancer. The operation involves removing the breast and lumps under the arms, but leaves the chest muscles intact. Fully 85 percent of American women with breast cancer are candidates for this surgery. Mastectomy is not the o n l y t r e a t m e n t f o r b r e a s t c a n c e r . Radiation therapy is a promising technique for women who have early- stage breast cancer. This procedure involves removing only the breast lump and some or all of the underarm lymph nodes. The remaining breast tissue is then treated with radiation. With this trend toward simpler surgery, at least 80 percent of women who undergo mastectomy may be eligible for breast reconstruction, which itself has been greatly refined by improvement during the 1970s both in implant materials and surgical technique. These new techniques are helping many women live longer and happier fives.
