In 1980-81, Stoffel was among 16 collegiate softball competitors to be considered for this honor. This past year, Soffel was in the company of only four softball competitors. In addidtion, Stoffel, a cen- terfielder, was the only Midwestern candidate for the softball award and she shared the nomination with four pitchers. This year's selection in the sport of softball went to California State-Fullerton's Kathy Van Wyk. Hunter Safety The City of McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation and the Illinois Department of Conservation are sponsoring a Hunter Safety Training Course. Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting. This course is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12-19 at Parkland Junior High School. Pre-registration is required for this course, but there will be no charge. Volleyball Marathon Cary-Grove is the site for the fifth annual 10 hour volleyball marathon to benefit the muscular Dystrophy Association. This volleyball spec tacular will be held on Saturday, March 19. Play will begin at 9 a.m. and there will be hourly door prize drawings for the players and three grand prizes for the top money raisers. Basketball Tourney Anyone 18-years of age or older is welcome to participate. Funds raised will help support MDA's fight against 40 neuromuscular diseases that kill and cripple thousands of children and adults. BRIAN SPEARS SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE WOODSTOCK -- Marian Central Catholic continued its winning ways with a 70-57 victory over St. Edward high school. "We're on a little bit of a roll right now," said Marian's coach Hans Rokus. "Ever since Christmas we've been playing intelligent ball." The Hurricanes' record was 3-8 coming into 1983, but they have played 6-5 since the Christmas tournament to improve to nine wins and 13 losses. In Friday's contest, St. Edward's Green Wave led 33-30 at the half, but was outscored, 20-10, in the third period, falling behind 50-43, Andy Hartlieb hit four field goals in the quarter. St. Ed's was then outscored 20-14 in the fourth quarter as the hot-shooting Hurricanes pulled away. Marian made 80 percent of its second-half field goals, with junior Chuck Hartlieb scoring 14 points in the half to boost his team. "I thought we had good shot selection, got the ball inside well, and got some good offensive rebounds," Rokus said of his team's second-half spurt. "The patterns were nice and the ball went through." Marian's defense was also a key as they held St. Edward's Steve Lundy, who scored 14 points in the first half, to just two in the second. The Green Wave opened a 5-0 lead in the early going with a field goal and a three-point play by Lundy, but the Hurricanes' Mark Thompson came right back with a three-point play of his own to put Marian on the board and close behind the Wave. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter until the score was finally deadlocked 17-17 at the end of the first period. The lead seesawed throughout the second quarter until the Green Wave, with the help of eight points from Lundy, took a 33-30 edge at the half:' Sophomore Andy Hartlieb and Senior Mark Thompson paced the Hurricanes with 19 points each as Chuck Hartlieb netted 18. "I think we can win them all until the tournament," Rokus said. The Canes' will have their hands full Tuesday night when they host cross- town rival Woodstock. Warren Stall Hands Lady Hawks A Loss JOHNSBURG -- Despite a 20 point perfromance from Theresa Hauck, the Johnsburg girls' Basketball team lost to Warren 50-43 Saturday. The loss gave the Skyhawks a 0-l6 Northwest Suburban Conference loss and 3-12 overall. "This was by far our best per formance on the free throw line," said Nancey Fahey, coach of the Skyhawks. Her team shot a respec table 70 percent, hitting on 19 free tosses. i The Skyhawks were only downed by two points with three minutes left int the game when Warren went into a stall to pull out the victory. "I'm happy we played a good ballgame, but we have to win a ballgame," said Fahey. Among those from were two couples: Missy rim Adams; Bert Rank and Bob Janis Schwebke. District qualifiers will be determine this week, with play scheduled Feb. 18 at Rockford. Bicycle Club The McHenry County Bicycle Club will hold it's February meeting on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in room 263 at McHenry County College. Annual elections will take place at this meeting and also planning for the Club's March 3 presentation of Haldeman, Shermer and Marinao in "An Inside Look at the Great American Bike Race" which will be offered at the McHenry High School West Campus. Tickets will be available for this event at the meeting and people willing to help can sign up at this time. MCBC membership is open to all bicycling enthusiasts in and out of McHenry County. Softball Award MACOMB - Patricia Stoffel, 23- year-old native of McHenry, has recently been selected as a candidate for the Broderick Sports Award for her outstanding achievement in the sport of fast pitch softball in 1981-82. She is currently in her first year as assistant coach for Western Illinois University. FEBRUARY 1R i<»83 Two Skyhawk Wrestlers Advance To Sectionals DICK PETERSON SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE HARVARD -- The Johnsburg Skyhawks finished the 1982-83 wrestling season with a seventh place , at the Harvard regional last weekend and advanced two wrestlers to the Piano sectionals next weekend. For the 10th straight year, Harvard captured the class A wrestling title, locking up the championship midway, throughout the semifinals and ad vancing 11 wrestlers to the Piano sectional. Marian Central, which finished fifth in the 10-team tournament, advanced four wrestlers to sectional action. There was no doubt as to who was in charge of the Harvard regional. Every member of the Hornet wrestling team advanced to the semifinals and all but two wrestled for individual titles. With 10 Horents in championship bouts, Harvard laid claim to seven individual crowns, three second-place finishes and a third. "Yes, it's the 10th straight and it's my fifth (as head coach), but I'll tell you what -- they get better evry year," Harvard Coach Dick Holt- freter said. "I've got some kids who wrestled way above their head," Holtfreter said. Assistant Coach John O' Brien added: "That's what you call the 'tournament wrestler.'" Harvard racked up 186.5 points to 80 for second place Valley Lutheran and 79.5 for Kaneland. Elgin St. Edward placed fourth with 57.5, Marian Central was fifth with 51, Richmond- Burton was sixth with 47, Johnsburg was seventh with 38.5, Hampshire was eighth with 30, Marengo was ninth with 28, and Alden-Hebron was 10th with 20. Guy Bazilwich at 98-pounds and Mike Hurkes at 132-pounds were the two Skyhawks to advance to the sectionals. Bazilwich took a third place and Hurckes was a second place finisher. Four Skyhawks placed fourth in their weight classes, but didn't ad vance; Joe Rowland at 112-pounds. Mark Dumelle at 155-pounds and John Grenman at heaveyweight. Individual champions for Harvard were: Dan Muehl, 105 pounds; Mark Hage, 112; Jeff Putnam 132; Shawn Gerard, 138 pounds; Tim Linhart, 167; David Goltfereter 185; and heavyweight David Abzug. Other sectional qualifiers fof Harvard are: Ken Sorensen 98 second place; James Rathbun 119 third place; John Baker 145 second place; and Ron Howe 155 second place. Marian Central, which advanced four wrestlers, started the cham pionship round off with an individual title at 98 pounds. Mark Wohnrade defeated Sorensen in that match, 10-7. Hurricane Kevin Niedospial, the No. 1 seed at 145 pounds, was stopped by Baker in the first round, but went on to claim third place. Marian's 167-pounder John Nebel also claimed a third-place finish to advance to the sectionals. Cane heavyweight Rich Kelly took a second losing to Abzug by a pin. Valley Lutheran advanced six wrestlers, Kaneland advanced five, R-B advanced three, Jonhsburg and Wheaton Christian advanced two, and Hamphire, Marengo and St. Edward advanced one each. The Piano sectional begins Friday at 6 p.m. The second session begins at, noon Saturday with champioonship and third-place matches at 7 p.m. The top three finishers advance to the state tournament Feb. 25 and 26 at Champiagn. The event was orginally scheduled for January 7, but snow moved the date up to the next weekend. Still no snow, the event was postponed indefintely until conditions would get better. Snowfall did come and officials decided to hold it Sun day. The event started at 8 a.m. Sunday morning and the snowmobilers left Raymonds Pier Inn shortly after 9 a.m. Despite the 40 degree weather, Wright said trail conditions were good. "1 don't think the weather had anything to do with it (poor turnout)," Wright said. Besides being the committee chariman, Wright collected the highest amount of pledges. His total climbed $2,519. Right behind him was Kevin Shay with $2,285. Shay also collected the largest single pledge at $1,000. In third place was Kevin Rader at $520, Rich Mazerus $430 and Ed Kasha $250. Prizes were also handed out to the youngest rider, Todd Mazerin; oldest machine, Tony Bianchi and traveling the fur thest, Rich Bellains. The proceed presentation to both rescue squads will be held at Chapel Hill Country Club Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. In spite of two postponements and not real ideal conditions, 37 snowmobilers took part in the eighth annual Rescue 50 snomobile marathon Sunday and raised $8,580 so far for McHenry and Johnsburg rescue squads. The amount of money raised has not been made offical yet because of late pledges. The event fell short of the $15,000 goal set for this year, but Jim Wright, committee chair man was still pleased.
