Beck realizes what kind of test his Hawks are up against. 'Harvard is playing very good basketball We have to do two against them. One is keeping them off the boards. They have a lineup of 6-7, 6-4.6-3.6-2 and a'small guard. That's a heck of a lineup. Number two we have to shoot well against a zone. Those are two things important for us." Like the last time these two !mbk met Jacobs is suffering from some injuries and that leaves Warrior Coach Ken Ludwig m hmbo Who ts going to play" Who is going to start"' This time their star center Tom Schafer is the injured player. He sprained his ankle against Cary- Grove last Friday. Also, their two twin 6-foot-5 forwards. Chuck and Chns Baine are suffering from »Hn»« but are expected to play. The game gets underway at Buckner Gym tonight at 7:30 p.m. It will be Parents Night "We think so." said Jacobs Coach Ken Shmko on whether Schafer will play or not. "He won't be 100 percent. "We can t replace him with one tod. We need three or fois-kids to fin in." To help fill the vacant boles, SKmkn has brought up his son. Mark, from the sophomore team. Mark SHrwkn is a 6-fooC-3 cento- on the junior varsity team "What we are doing in practice is going with the idea be will play." said Ludwig. The last time. Brian Mekush was si^posed to be out and he up playing half the game. '"Right now we are doing a lot of gambling in practice, a lot of double teaming. If he doesn't play we will have to make some adjustments." Tonight s last Fox Valley game is important to both squads. Jacobs is State Wrestling Trip Has Many Meanings MIKE LAMB JOHNSBURG -- The first Johnsburg High School wrestler to earn a trip to the University of Illinois Assembly Hall for the Illinois High School Association State Wrestling Meet has dif ferent meanings far different people. Far Johnsburg high school, it mean a boost for their five-year- old athletic program and school pride. For the wrestling program it means a shot in the arm for the young program which has been struggling. For Don March it means a lot of hard work into his program at Johnsburg is paying off. For the younger wrestlers at JahiKburg. they have somebody to look up to. But for Mike Hurckes, it means a dream come true and a meaningful goal accomplished. "'Early in the season I just wanted to get down state. Now that I have made it, I want to place. It would be a little disappointing If I don't place," said Hxarkes. Hurckes will be one of 144 wrestlers battling for a class A wrestling title and one of 12 in the 132-pomd class He is scheduled to wrestle Friday at noon against Shawn Stafford of Mahomet in the first round Hurckes carries a 29-8-1 record against Stafford's 24-5 record -It's going to be tough," said Hurckes. "The best 12 in the state will be there Everyone is good enough to win. It's just who gets the breaks." It was no break that Hvckes made it to Assembly Hall in 1383. Last year. Barkes was the only Skyhawk to make wtimh This year, the senior was one of two Skyhawks to wrestle at sectionals. Hurckes used his experience and prikd off a socood plftOC at the Piano sec tional. Hurckes lost the cham pionship match to Mike Crasuo of Manonka 6-0. Hurckes said the sectionals was "one of the best weekends of wrestling I ever had." March looks upon the success of Hurckes as a springboard for further success far his wrestling "This is the biggest shot in the arm. Getting Mike to state is defintely light in the hamel. It's die best thing to happen to ust" The Jchnsfavg wrestling struggled through a 5-13-1 season and failed to win a Northwest Suburban Conference match. Hurckes said it was difficult to wrestle well, while the team struggled, sometimes getting shut out. "It works in two ways. It was hard for me when it was my turn to wrestle and the other guys didn't do so well. It is kind of / depressing when we are losing, but when you can pull up a win it feels good. . "Last year I was the only one to get to sectionals. This year I had Guy Bazilewich with me." Hurckes comes from a family of six brothers and two of them were wrestlers. He contributes much of his success and interest to wrestling to the two brothers, Steve and Jeff. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hurckes of 2721 Tichfielt Street, McHenry. Now that he is there, Hurckes wants to make the most of the opportunity. "I hear a lot about it (Assembly Hall) and just walking in and looking at the place is something. That's why you get there early to get a good look at the place." March feels his prize wrestler has a good chance to make it past the first round "At state, you don't know what to expect. We feel we have a chance to get in a position to place at state." Both Hurckes and March said the same strategy used at the sectionals will be used at the state meet. "There will be some tough matches," said March. "We are going to try and wear people down and look for op por tun ties to ^ score and get ahead early and stay ahead. Mike did that during the first three matches at sec tionals. "The only time we are going to take a chance is if we get behind. Otherwise we are going to be pretty right-wing about it. Hurckes said he will take "one match at a time." March wants Hurckes to take advantage of his strengths. "Mike is strong He is good on take downs and scoring after being underneath and from getting away from people. It takes one heck of a wrestler to keep him down. He is one beck of threat for anybody who gets on the mat with him." A total of 15 wrestlers from tfife Northwest Suburban Conference qualified for the state meet. Antioch leads the NWSC with eight wrestlers. Hurckes' weight class, 132- pounds, has the most representatives with four: Tad DeRousse of Antioch, John Cash- more of Wauconda, Todd Jenkins of Grant and Hurckes. Sue champions from 1962 will return and a total of 36 wrestlers will enter the meet with unbeaten records during the 46th Illinois High School Association. Competition starts at 10 a.m. Friday and a total of432 wrestlers from 223 different schools will compete in the 444 bouts needed to determine champions in 12 weight classes. Two of the six defending champions are in class A: Senior Greg Durst of Mahomet-Seymour at 112-pounds and senior Lynn Thomsen of Normal at 185- pounds. tied with Crystal Lake South for the top spot in the conference with 12-1 records. McHenry, meanwhile, is strffering from a four game losing streak and need this game to get on the right track going into regionals. Also, the Warriors need das game to show they can beat the FVC best. Jacobs won the last meeting 59-58. The wincing shot was made by Schafer. but the Warriors had two free throw chances with only a couple seconds left on the clock to win it and missed them. When Ludwig was asked what his team must do differently from the last time to win, he said jokingly, "make free throws." "We need this ballgame," said Ludwig. "If we win this game, we have a good dance to win the regional. We need a win real bad." The one thing that Ludwig has been fighting, however, is low morale at practices. "The practices are down. February 22 thru 2* Brite Se*4 IS ONSTAGE •vfflotrsutuji The kids really are not with it and shouldn't be that way. It's the last game. They just have to hang in there They are a strange bunch of kids, maybe thay can hang in there." Slimko. on the other hand, has a lot of respect for the Warriors. "It's very tough to play at McHenry," said Slimko. "We control our own destiny" McHenry could make their season by beating us. We expect a tough game."
