-2 PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25.1983 --EARL WALSH" So I Hear j-» The Holy Season of Lent is with us and memory goes back to early years jivhen it was standard practice for kids »to give up candy for those long 40 days *and 40 nights. <• y A shoe box was always used to store ^whatever candy might come our way ^luring the season of fasting. Some of *that candy got hard and the regular *)iard candy got sticky. It's an old joke, but some people still Tsay they are giving up strawberries for lent. At high school age, we walked a mile to church for evening services. Parents didn't have to push the boys. They met the girls and walked home with them. That was religion in ac tion. Renee Freund reminded us that a Lawrence Welk rerun would be on TV Sunday night. I liked it! There are some real signs of spring. We saw some boys in Johns burg with baseball and gloves playing catch. On second thought, I'm not going to have my snow tires taken off for a while. That unpredictable month of March has been known to whack us over the ear with wild storms. Fred Meyer is conducting the C.O.F. State Basketball Tournament again this year for the umpteenth time. He says this will be his last year. We heard that before. From Richard Doherty comes the story that Bob Blake caught a 13 inch, 7 pound small mouth bass Sunday. Also, the prize catch will be mounted. I ate my fill of pancakes at the Johnsburg Booster Club breakfast Sunday. Thought the ladies were putting on the pancake feast, but found the men doing the kitchen work. Martha (Miller) Freund, who predicted a mild winter, said she also saw geese flying over. j i n i T T i T T i m i i m i i n i n i H I H I I I I L When she asked what direction our flock was flying and I told her southeast, she began to wonder about her prediction for the rest of the winter season. When candidates are out beating the bushes day and night, we always wonder who is home tending the store. We are approaching the season when mothers used to give their children sulphur and molasses as a tuner upper. From Phoenix, where the tem perature is 70 degrees, comes* this message: Dear Earl: This is our annual card. Enjoying the Southwest this year. We will be back in Grayslake in March. Still no place like N. Illinois. Betty and Dan O'Shea For those who wouldn't know, Betty and Dan are natives of McHenry. They drifted into Lake County some years ago. This is the part of the baseball season I like best. Many trades have been made. More will come. Rookies come to camp and built up in the press as sure-fire greats. For some hitters, it is the old story. Send a wire, "Mom, I'm coming home. They started to throw curves." Some rookies aren't given much of a look. Some have a great spring, then are sent back to the minors. Once in a while an unsung hero emerges. I eat up the stories. I took the lawn mower in for the annual checkup and have it home -- all ready for Alvina when the grass gets green. The time has come to start picking out those beautiful St. Patrick's Day cards. LATE FLASH-- Joe Wagner saw a robin this week. Would you believe? That robin flew in, pulling a banner that read: "Greetings From Cub Camp". MCC Offers Tr ip McHenry County college is offering adults the opportunity to bike their way through Holland, the country of landmarks, as part of a non-credit course. Some danger signs for home wiring problems are: lights flicker or stay dim when a major appliance goes out; a motor slows; a fuse blows or circuit breaker opens; a toaster or iron doesn't iieat properly; and a television ^picture shrinks. r ̂ ZJujLce <UoCd !Z7< IWWBWHMB CL[E± I FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 23, 1933). This money is to be used during the months of March, April and May. Just recently matters have been brought to our attention which show the real need of some kind of civic organization in McHenry. For in stance, the fight which is now going on for a location of our route from the northwest to the Century of progress Exposition in Chicago this year and the needfor a movement to advertise McHenry and attract the thousands of World's Fair visitors to this com munity.
