We saw some boys in Johnsburg with baseball and gloves playing catch. On second thought, I'm not going to have my snow tires taken off for a while. That unpredictable month of March has been known to whack us over the ear with wild storms. Fred Meyer is conducting the C.O.F. State Basketball Tournament again this year for the umpteenth time. This is the part of the baseball season I like best. Many trades have been made. More will come. Rookies come to camp and built up in the press as sure-fire greats. For some hitters, it is the old story. Send a wire, "Mom, I'm coming home. They started to throw curves." Some rookies aren't given much of a look. Some have a great spring, then are sent back to the minors. Once in a while an unsung hero emerges. I eat up the stories. I took the lawn mower in for the annual checkup and have it home -- all ready for Alvina when the grass gets green. The time has come to start picking out those beautiful St. Patrick's Day cards. The money will come from the gasoline fund. This money is to be used during the months of March, April and May. Just recently matters have been brought to our attention which show the real need of some kind of civic, organization in McHenry. For in­ stance, the fight which is now going on for a location of our route from the northwest to the Century of progress Exposition in Chicago this year and the need for a movement to advertise McHenry and attract the thousands of World's Fair visitors to this com­ munity. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 25,1943). Committees were named this week to take charge of the annual Red Cross Roll Call and War drive, which will be held March 1. Charles J. Reihan- sperger is chairman of the McHenry Red Cross drive and Ray McGee is chairman of the War Fund drive. Thomas P. Bolger is publicity chairman and Robert L. Weber is treasurer of the drive. Due to the rationing of food and the small amount of merchandise we have to offer, including meat, we find it necessary to discontinue our delivery service, effective March i, 1943. Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bennett of Riverside drive, McHenry, vas among 1,214 students who completed work for mid­ year degrees from the University of Illinois. Diplomas are now being prepared for the graduates and will be mailed sometime before the end of March. Ralph graduated from the class of engineering and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army signal corps. He will report for duty at Fort Monmouth, N.J. on March 4. Judy Baur, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Baur, topped contestants from nine schools in the district this month to win the "bake'off" contest held at Crystal lake. She is a student in Home Economics III in the local high school. The judges awarded her first place on her cherry pie made under their watchful eye, as well as on her demonstration in making it. Conclude Early Fellowship Hour At Wonder Lake Church Sunday, Feb. 27, will be the fi Sunday for the winter potluck and afternoon services at the Wonder Lake Bible church. Beginning in March, the Bible Fellowship hour will move back to 6 p.m. For the morning worship service which begins at 10:50 a.m., Pastor Merle D. Conklin will continue preaching from the book of I Corin­ thians, chapter 7, verses 10 through 24. The title of his message will be "Marriage and Divorce". Following the noon potluck meal to which everyone is invited, he will continue his series on prophesy at the 1:30 p.m. Bible fellowship hour with a message entitled "Is Hell For Real?" The College and Career group will be gone this weekend on a singles retreat. But the younger people will be around for some activities. On Saturday, the AWANA groups will have their first practice session for the AWANA Olympics and then the girls will go for a swim party at Duncan YMCA in Volo. Regular AWANA flights ^ontinys to be Thur­ sdays at 7 p.m. fyr grades 6,7 and 8,.and Fridays at 7 p.m. tor K through fifth grade, meeting at Parkland school gym. There is also a very good sized group meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. for a children's choir under the direction of Charleru Conklin. This group is just getting started, and already there is a great deal of enthusiasm from those who attended the first rehearsal. The children's choir is open for all youngsters from ages 4 years through 14. Children need not attend the Wonder Lake Bible church in order to participate in this activity. The only prerequisite is an enjoyment of singing. The Wonder Lake Bible church welcomes the people of the com­ munity to participate in all of its services and activities.
