Seek To Form Camping Club The National Campers and Hikers association is inviting campers in the Lake and McHenry county areas to help form a family group camping club. National Campers and Hikers association is an organization dedicated to camping fellowships, the preservation of natural heritage, and the strengthening of family bonds through shared activities in the out-of- doors. This is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. There is something for everyone: R.V. owners, tenters, back­ packers and anyone who loves the great outdoors. The cadets are in training at Gait airport through the flying services of airport manager Hank Ziegler. Crane has announced that his office again this year will par­ ticipate in the Congressional Senior Citizen Intern program. Plans call for sending two senior citizens from the 12th Congressional district to Washington to take part in the 1963 program from May 23 through May 27. Those selected are given the op­ portunity of receiving a first hand look at Washington and Congress at work. Interns become better acquainted not only with Congress in general, but also in particular with legislation affecting the elderly. Although interns must pay their expenses, this is not just a vacation in Washington. Par­ ticipants are active individuals who, once they return from their in­ ternship, apply what they have learned within the senior community. Persons wishing to apply must meet certain qualifications. Among these is the active involvement in senior citizen projects in his' or her com^ munity. The applicant must be willing' to share what is learned with ot once the Washington program completed. The intern must be in good health! and at least 60 years of age. All interested senior citizens in the 12th district should send applications by March 15 stating why they would like to serve and how they would use , the program to benefit the Com­ munity once they return from Washington. Applications should include general information about the applicant's activities. Letters of recommendation from community leaders familar with the applicant's qualifications: should accompany the application. Meaning Behind Recycling McHenry County Defenders remind that recycling means more than bringing certain items to the drive; it means buying products which can be recycled, keeping those items separate after use, and then returning them to be reused, refilled, or remanufactured into the same or similar products (i.e., newspaper into newsprint, glass containers into other glass containers, aluminum cans into more aluminum cans, etc.) Only a minimum amount of care is required by the homeowner to prepare materials for recycling. In the case of glass bottles and jars, all plastic and metal must be removed; (for example, many pop bottles are packaged in plastic jackets). To save volunteer workers a lot of time, often in unpleasant weather conditions, the public is urged to remove these jackets before bringing the bottles to the drive. Another problem for recyclers is the aluminum ring left on wine and other beverage bottles when the cap is removed. Defenders recommend the use of an ice pick or other sturdy, pointed tools for this job. Both the plastic and aluminum must be removed to avoid "poisoning" the glass mix to be melted and re-used. Paper labels are harmless and need not be removed. Eighth grade students of Montini Middle school will be co-sponsoring the McHenry recycling drive with the McHmry County Defenders Satur­ day, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The drive is conducted at the McHenry Market Place parking lot on West Route 120. Both parents and students will be on hand in this family project to raise money for a class trip. If you cannot bring your materials to the recycling drive, contact Montini Middle school at 385-1022 to arrange for a pickup.
