,V\ } Cast of Lenten Play Industry In Expansion PAGE 5 - PI.AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH 2,1983 Every Wednesday evening at 6:15 p.m., prior to worship, families gather in the fellowship hall of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church for a pot-luck dinner. Participating in the one-act play this week will be Henry Kot, Tom Lotito, Jr., Charles Haack, Aleen Tiffany, and Charlaine Tiffany. The public is welcome to attend all services at the church. Good news for all concerned' about employment and economic development in McHenry county is the building expansion ready to begin in early March at Lenco Electronics Inc., 1330 Belden street, McHenry. Concurrently, the company will be marking its first decade as a county manufacturer of small and medium- size transformers. County, state and local dignitaries will join Lenco personnel in a ground breaking ceremony at 1:30 p.m. March 3 to launch construction of a 6,000-square-foot addition to the 15,000-square-foot existing plant. Targeted for completion in June, the enlarged manufacturing area will facilitate increasing production demand and in time will generate 40 to 50 new jobs. Issued under the auspices of the McHenry County board, industrial revenue bonds amounting to $550,000 were obtained by Lenco to finance construction and to purchase ad ditional property adjacent to the site. The county Economic Development Committee (EDC) provided assistance on available funding programs. The firm is also seeking an Illinois Training Program grant to help defray costs of teaching specialized skills to the new em ployees who will be hired. Company president Lenard Duncan and vice-president Nick Samaras and their 100 employees will observe the tenth anniversary on March 1. Special recognition will be given those who have been with the company since its inception, including Martha Duda, Carol Hamann, Sophie Krzciuk, Josephine Larsen^ William Ryan, Rose Scalzitti, Hazel Lo Schiavo and Sandra Thurow. "Len" Duncan formed Lenco Electronics" in 1973, renting second floor space in Crystal Lake. Partner Samaras joined him a few months afterward. The two electrical engineers headquartered company operations at Crystal Lake for five years. As job orders continued to multiply, their desire for larger permanaent quarters became a necessity. They decided to build in the new Tonyan Industrial park on Rt. 31. In 1978 Lenco, Inc., moved into its own modern facility, one of the first industries to occupy the park. Business grew, with the year 1982 the best ever for the company. Samaras explains, "With the whole world changing to high grade technology, things that were made five years ago mechanically are now being made electronically. More and more items are now being converted to electronics, and that has really helped our industry." Running two production shift* a day Lenco builds a variety of tran sformers for General Electric and other companies, a majority in the computer industry. Some of the assembly is automated although the process is basically bench-type work, Samaras said. cThe phrase "crocodile tears" derives from an ancient Greek legend--The giant lizard was believed to attract its victims by loud mofening and then shed tears while it devoured them. MI2 W.itHm Stfa.t Weather Why is the weather of the Hawaiian Islands practically ideal? The much-famed climate of the Pacific vacation islands is caused by their location (latitude) and the huge mass of water surrounding them, and the typography of the land itself. The geean area provides a constant temperature since it does not give up its heat as readily as a land mass. The latitude (about that of Cuba) promises warmth. The breezes from the sea in day time and down the mountain slopes at night insure com fortable temperatures rather than excessive heat. Thus the combination of low mountains (these condi tions pertain to Oahu parti cularly and to most of the other islands generally), ocean mass, latitude, pre vailing winds and other factors contribute to the amazing constancy of Hawaii's good weather.
