Firchau was very pleased with the free throw statistic, because his team has had trouble making free throws. But, even with the shutout on the free throw line, Beck knew his Skyhawks just got beat by a better team. "Our kids played well the whole month of February. They lost eight games in a row in the middle of the season. Any other kids, that would have ended the season. I'm really proud of our kids. They represented our school well. I'm just proud to be associated with them." Harvard jumped out to a 8-2 lead on the Skyhawks in the first quarter. But the Skyhawks outscored the Hornets 10-6 to end the quarter only down 14- 12. Harvard drew first blood to open the second quarter, but the Skyhawks scored the two baskets. Wharton's jump shot tied the score at 16-16. But Harvard scored the next six points and owned a 24-16 lead and the Hawks took a timeout with 2:30 left in the first half. Leon and Jeff Preston hit jump shots to narrow the lead to 24-20. Anderson ended the quarter, hitting two free throws. Harvard was able to stay ahead of the pesky Skyhawks throughout the third quarter. The highlight of the quarter, was a jump shot by Majercik from the corner of the floor on the side of the basket. He chased the ball down, grabbed it, and threw up the shot just before the buzzer and it went in. The Skyhawks went into the last quarter with a 34-32 lead. Shooting in the second half was poor by both teams. The Skyhawks shot 38 percent from the floor and Harvard only shot 26 percent. Anderson led all scorers with 15 points and Jim Leon and Jeff Preston led Johnsburg scoring with 10 a piece. Lady Warriors Upset Tigers (Continued from page 6) aggressiveness, the Warriors were able to pull off some successful fast- breaking. "Our fast-break killed them," said Wirtz. Brady agreed, "We had a problem with our defensive coverage. Mezzano broke our press. We quit that in the third quarter and went man-to-man press in the fourth quarter." Wirtz added, "We took it, never gave up. We just out played them." ****** The Lady Warriors play their last Fox Valley Conference game of the season Thursday night against Crystal Lake South. The Skyhawk girls basketball team lost a one point heartbreaker to the Richmond Rockets 44-43 Saturday night. The Skyhawks were looking for a repeat performance of their last meeting against the Rockets. John sburg had downed Richmond 36-26 in January to claim the title in the fourth annual Girls Varsity Basketball Tournament at Johnsburg. Despite a strong first quarter, early foul trouble in the second quarter chipped away Johnsburg's 9-6 lead. "When Joan Pierce, Michelle Swartzloff and Jane Pecucci all picked up two fouls, we had to switch to a zone defense and this allowed Rich mond to pull ahead," "explained Fahey. The change put less pressure on Richmond forward Tiffany King as she preceeded to swish three con secutive buckets and one free throw. Richmond also had the bonus from the free throw line, where Donna Klein made five out of six charity tosses, sending the Rockets up 23-18 at halftime. There was little scoring during the third quarter, but Johnsburg began to challenge the Rockets' lead. Pecucci sunk a field goal from near the top of the key to bring the Skyhawks within three points 23-20. Swartzloff then took charge and hit two free throws and two lay-ups with an assist from Sheri Scavo to narrow Richmond's ad- ' vantage. The Skyhawk defense was at a peak in the final two minutes of the quarter when they kept the Rockets from scoring. Earlier, however, the Rockets' King had connected on a field goal and three free-throws made by teammates Carolyn White and Nancy Weber helped to maintain the Rockets' slim 28-26 lead. Richmond forced the Skyhawks to make key turnovers and serious fouls to allow the Rockets to pull ahead 43- 34 with only two minutes left in the game. The Skyhawks refused to give up as they battled to bring themselves back within two points, 43-41, with only 30 seconds left. Richmond took possession on a Johnsburg foul, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Johnsburg regained possession, only to turn it over when Scavo traveled going up for a shot with 19 seconds remaining. The Rockets couldn't take ad vantage of the turnover, because Skyhawk Missy Christi forced a jump ball. A Johnsburg foul during the fumbled jump ball sent Rocket Nancy Helian to the free throw line where she put Richmond ahead 44-41 with nine seconds left to play. Rich mond fouled Scavo on the rebound of , the missed free throw. But, again the Skyhawks lost the chance to tie Rich mond when Scavo missed the bonus shot. A traveling violation in the final seconds by the Rockets gave the ball backeto the Skyhawks. Christi put the ball up for the bucket to hold Rich mond to a one point edge at the buz zer. "We really hustled to comeback in the final minutes," said Fahey. "But those turnovers were two missed chances and we just didn't capitalize." The Lady Skyhawks head into their final conference game against Grayslake on Tuesday nigh with a 4-15 overall record. BARB ANSELL JOHNSBURG -- Perhaps it was divine advantage which found the two Catholic schools, Woodstock's St. Mary's and McHenry's Montini, challenging each other for first place in the 15th Annual Sixth Grade Boys Basketball Tournament. In the end, it was St. Mary's with the luck of the Irish taming the Montini Mustangs 36-26 for the championship. "We matched up well against St. Mary's," said Montini coach Bart Winn, "but their size and their win over us earlier in the year helped them." St. Mary's squashed the Mustangs during much of the first half, holding them to a 13-4 half-time advantage. But the Mustangs came to life in the third quarter scoring 13 points and coming within two points of the Fighting Irish's 19-17 lead. St. Mary's six-foot center Greg Giels took command as he swished three buckets and four free-throws to put St. Mary's back out in front for the victory. Montini's leading scorer was Mike Hetterman with nine points and teammates Tim Mauer and Danny Wray each added five points. Coach Winn praised his team on their final performance. "We played very well and it was a total team ef fort." The Mustangs finished in second * place in the tournament find con cluded their conference season with a 18-3 record in the Fox Valley Catholic Conference. Third place in the tournament went to St. John's as they rolled over Johnsburg 34-24. The Supersonics outscored the Wildcats in the first two quarters two- to-one on fewer shots, taking a 26-13 advantage at halftime. The Wildcats improved their defense during the final quarters holding the Supersonics to eight points. However, yfolations and poor shooting kept Johnsburg from closing St. John's wide gap. "Experience had the upper hand," said St. John's Coach Jim Junkunc. "Because we play more games, we have a better shooting accuracy and take fewer shots." Wildcat Coach Wayne Hiller agreed with his overall record of 5-6, ex- pereince is very important. "We just haven't played much, but we also didn't play as good as were of capable of." The fifth place consolation game went right down to the final shot, but Lake Zurich came out the winner 29- 27. It looked as if it would be Lake Zurich uncontested with the 9-2 first quarter score. But Richmond's Chris Steadman made six of 10 free-throw shots, along with two field goals by _ '"Jjfead i6-i5. rcftirortCT founaboth teams even at 20-20. Lake Zurich's Doug Nigbor sank two field goals and three charity tosses during the fourth quarter, putting the Bears ahead. Richmond missed several free throw opportunties and in the final seconds Steadman threw up a shot which circled the rim and rolled out. Richmond's Coach Tim Kiefer> commended his team, "They were a bit nervous during the first quarter, but once we settled down we played , very well. Keifer agreed the game, • which lasted just under two hours, * tired most of his players, but praised his leading scorer. "Steadman gave 100 percent effort throughout the whole game and kept his team fighting." Richmond closed out their season with a 2-5 season and sixth place in the eight team tournament. St. Thomas of Crystal Lake and St. Bede were both eliminated in first round competition.
