Although they are made to take a lot of abuse, some attention will pro long life. A bit of string around a shaft or a par tial blockage of the hose will cause the machine to work less efficiently than it can and cause the mo tor to work harder than necessary. The result can be a burned out motor or damaged bearings. Soprano Ruth Ann Bishop, flutist Frank R. Historical Reprints Are Studied By Genealogists HOUSEHOLD ENERGY COSTS Do you have a cool idea of the cost of heating water for the family's use each year? Most people don't know since that cost is usually buried in the overall utility bills. You might be sur prised to learn that the cost for water heating is exceeded only by the cost of heating and cooling the home. Ac cording to Department of Energy (DOE) estimates, the typical yearly cost to heat water with a standard electric water heater is $400. That's based on DOE figures for a family of four using 64.3 gallons of hot water per day at an electric energy cost of 6.3 cents per kilowatt hour. One way many people are cutting that cost by as much as half is through the installation of heat pump water heaters. In some cases they can save up to $200 a year. These are ap pliances that can be added to existing or new electric, oil or LP gas water heaters. They extract heat from the surrounding air and, through heat pump action, transfer the heat to the water, which is heated to 140 degrees. Heat pumps, also dehumidify, helping to dry out damp basements or humid environments in the summer. They also supplement air con ditioning systems, of fering extra energy savings. If the heat pump water heater is installed near a waste heat source such as a washing machine, dryer or wood burning stove, it will make use of that heat, operating at an even greater efficiency. TODAY'S PSYCHOLOGY Dr. Steve Brody, PhD Q. A reader in Paso Robles asks about the mental as pects of gro wing old. A. It's no secret that more and more of us are living well into our sixties, seventies, and eighties. Between 80 and 85 percent of Americans over 65 years of age handle them selves well physically, intel lectually, and socially. These "young-old" learn quickly and generally cope well with retirement, grandparent- hood, and chronic illness. Most older people say they are happy with their lives. The 20% who suffer from severe loneliness is roughly the same percentage as a- mong younger adults. The most consistent finding to emerge from the study of ag ing is that people grow old in very different ways. CONSUMERS/CHECKLIST The publications committee of the McHenry County Genealogical society is in contact with several printing companies in regard to the possibility of having reprints done of the Combination Atlas-Plat Map book, originally printed in 1872. This is a very interesting book, showing the land owned by residents of the in dividual townships, at that time. Also under consideration is the reprint of the History of McHenry County Illinois first published in 1885. This latter book features biographical sketches of hundreds of early county residents. It also has much history on the early development of the county of McHenry, as well as the state of Illinois. In order to have some idea of how many persons might be interested in purchasing reprints of either of these books, the society would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has an interest. They may call Patricia Kusecevich at 344-4225 or Roberta Smith at 459-2563. There is no obligation to purchase the book by making the phone call. The call will simply give an indication of interest. The Genealogical society meets monthly, on the second Thursday of the month, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship hall of Grace Lutheran church, Washington street, Wood stock. The next meeting will be March 10, when Betty Massman will present a talk about doing research in various European countries, from stateside. The public is invited to attend this meeting and get acquainted with others interested in the pursuit of their family histories as well as learning another facet of genealogical research. Audubon (Welcomes Bluebirds Bluebirds, those harbingers of spring, will be just as welcome this year as they were following more severe winters, according to a McHenry county chapter of Illinois Audubon spokesman. "When many of us were young", she said, "Bluebirds were a common sight, building their nests in old wooden fence posts and holes in old fruit trees. As a result of their decline in McHenry county, this Audubon chapter, along with a number of others, began a Bluebird Trail". Before the trail could be started bird houses made to the specifications desired by Bluebirds were prepared. Sev Molino and Doug Young made more than 100 boxes the first year and supervised their location on posts at 4 to 5 feet above ground. In the first year (1978), only one pair of Bluebirds took advantage of these ready-made nest boxes.. Each year, the number has increased slowly, and, in 1982, 17 pairs nested and raised 50 fledgelings. The public is invited to attend a program on the Bluebird trail to be held Tuesday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the office of the McHenry County Defenders, 65 North Williams street, Crystal Lake (second floor). The program will consist of a short slide program followed by ja discussion led by committee mem bers, Sev and Wilma Molino, Gill Moreland, and Maryanne Kaht. On display will be several Bluebird houses of various styles, as well as Bluebird, Wren, Chickadee and House Sparrow nests. For further information about this program or how to participate in this year's Bluebird Trail, contact the committee chairmen, the Molinos, at 338-3515. WE DELIVER DELIVERY HOURS: MON-THURS 5 P.M.
