PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9.1983 The Grass Fire: A Nightmare For Firemen - vir • r'<2mm , v • i m immm mmMMm fc \ y ; i f*vHWV :• ~ > i* ' It was shortly after 11 a.m. last Thursday when the alert was sounded for a grass fire in the Johnsburg-Sunnyside area. The fire turned out to be larger than expected and all three companies of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to the blaze. The fire scene commander, Co. II Assistant Fire Chief Richard Woellert said his primary concern was the protection of property in the area. The grass fire trucks from each of the three stations were positioned so that they could head off the rapidly spreading fire before it reached any of the houses which surrounded the involved area. The grass fire trucks are pickup trucks equipped with hose lines and limited quantity water tanks. These were refilled as necessary from Co. I and II tankers which were also called to the scene. Before the fire was extinguished, it would have blackened between 20 and 30 acres of land. The charred earth visible from Johnsburg-Wilmot road extended for more than a half-mile, north of Church street, from Channel Beach drive west. ., . „ „ "The fire even jumped a road and ignited grass in a vacant lot, Woellert said. "The road must have been 20 feet wide. How it jumped it is beyond me. Each time we got the fire under control, the wind picked up and it was off again." •. ' In areas where there was little danger of the fire reaching a structure, fire fighters used Indian tanks to extinguish the advancing fire line. With the water filled metal backpacks strapped to their backs and hand pumps and the end of about three foot of hose, six firemen worked on putting out the fire. In another locale, five more men were literally beating the brush with brooms to stop the advancing flames. "It was long, hot work. Sometimes the men had to jump off the trucks because of the heat," Woellert said. "It took about two hours to bring the fire under control." In addition to fire problems caused by the wind, there were other headaches as well. In one backyard, a tanker sank in the soft earth and had to be winched out of the ruts. Woellert said the blaze was evidently started when flames got away from someone who had started a small rubbish fire. "There was no damage to any structures whatsoever," Woellert said. "Just a lot of burnt grass. The men did a great job."
