PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9,1983 EARL WALSH" fio I Hear Dear "Flash": ^ After studying the picture of So. Main St. in a recent issue, I think you overlooked something of interest. Above the McAllister drug store were the offices of two of McHenry's most respected and best loved professional men. I mean R. G. Chamberlain, Dentist, and A. I. Froelich, M.D. What do you think? Another Old Timer S . I . H . depends upon its friends. How right you are. Guess we didn't go upstairs when identifying the buildings. What do I think? I can't think of any finer professional men than the two you mentioned. The McAllister drug store had sit down ice cream service with marble top tables and twisted wire frames. Real class. It is either a feast or a famine. Letters are coming in right and left this week. I'll spread them over two columns. A great help are those letters. Keep em coming. Larry Lund thoughtfully mailed us a section from his Monroe Evening Times which shows choice recipes for St. Patrick's Day. He hopes Alvina and I will enjoy them. Am sure we will. A swig of Irish Mist Will top off the food of the day, Larry. To the Earl Walsh Clearing House: "You have been so good about putting the notice for McHenry Day in Florida in the 'So I Hear' column. Will you kindly put the notice in again for March 26, 1983 at Frank Howard Park, Tarpon Springs, Fla.? Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and everybody in attendance is asked to bring their own lunch and beverage. March is the month for many McHenry visitors in Fla. and we invite them all to attend. "Bill and Pauline Pries' Dear Bill and Pauline: Glad to be the clearing house for so many Florida McHenryites. Considering the winter we have enjoyed, I imagine many of our people went down to Florida to cool off. Have checked your address and find Bill still hadn't moved to the KEYS. S.I.H. Miller-Publisher 3toarb ©inning JJrtospaptr The phrase "crocodile tears" derives from an ancient Greek legend-- The giant lizard was believed to attract its victims by loud moaning and then shed tears while it devoured them. Remember Way Back When an umbrella mender used to come to town a couple of times a year? BELIEVE IT OR NOT-- As we entered the McHenry Country Club dining hall Friday night, we met Vale and Marge Adams at a table they occupied so many years. Vale had a story to tell me. It was so strange that I was sure he was putting me on. It seems Harry Hans and Harry Jr., Gary Adams and Jack Mueller (of the now famous Taylor Made Golf Co.) were hunting at the Wold hunting club. ritarry Jr. (known as a good shot) raised his gun to bring down a bird, but couldn't get a shot away as the bird flew right into the barrel of the gun and killed itself. Marge verified the story and I began to believe. Harry Sr. and his %ife Evelyn and their mothers sat at a nearby table so I table hopped. They further verified the story so BELIEVE IT OR NOT. I believe. Have heard some big fish stories, but that is the strangest bird story you will ever hear. Highly respected people say the story is true. Must confess there is a little plot behind the query "Who the hell is Bill Thomas". Rita Bacon Ulrich phoned. She has a son-in-law named Bill Thomas. In fact, she says there are four of them in this area. It wasn't her Bill. Eventually the real Bill Thomas will stand up. Tom Bolger was trying to recall (after FredSchoewer's death) if there was a "Toots" . Schoewer. Herb Reihansperger sigged him onto me. Nope. There was a "Huppy" but no "Toots". Have since thought Tom might have been thinking of Andrew Eddy's son "Toots". Or, does Tom remember that far back? "Dear Mr. Walsh: "I just thought you might enjoy this. 3ut please understand that this is not meant for you yet. HOW TO KNOW YOU ARE GROWING OLDER "1. Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt, doesn't work. "2. Your little black book contains only names that end in M.D. "3. You get winded playing chess. "4. You join a health club and don't go. "5. You're still chasing women, but can't remember why. "6. You look forward to a dull evening. "7. You turn out the light for economic rather than romantic reasons. "8. You sit in a rocking chair and can't get it going. "9. Your knees buckle but your belt won't. "10. Dialing long distance wears you out. "11. Your back goes out more than you do. "12. Your pacemaker makes the garage door go up when you watch a pretty girl go by. "13. You sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there. "Connie" Trish Overly, Woodstock, county-wide Tag day chairman for the Easter Seal Society for McHenry County, has her canisters ready for groups and organizations throughout the county to assist with Tag day March 25-26. FANCY THAT! The coldest place on earth is not, as many people think the North - or even the South Pole. It's the Polus Nedostupnosti - the Pole of Cold - in Antarctica, somewhat north and east of the South Pole. The annual mean temperature there is believed to be minus 72 degrees Fahrenheit. That's a mean mean temperature. An increasing number of fast food restaurants are giving a warm welcome to a way to keep their cold drinks colder, longer; foam cups. Researchers have found that foam keeps drinks colder. It keeps the ice solid, longer, too. Ask Help For Easter Tag Day Trish Overly, Woodstock, chairman of the tag day for the Easter Seal Society for McHenry County slated for Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, is calling for groups and organizations throughout the county to help the society by tagging in their hometown areas. According to Ms. Overly, "Tag day is an annual, integral part of our spring Easter Seal campaign and it offers a great opportunity for schools, clubs and organizations to take an active stand in raising funds to help pay for therapy for the disabled <)f McHenry county. If your school, club or organization would like to help, please phone the Therapy center at 815-338-1707." Tag day traditionally falls the weekend before the Easter holiday and taggers give individuals small lily symbols as they donate to symbolize their support of Easter Sealg' rehabilitative efforts. The Easter Seal society maintains a Therapy center at 708 Washington street, Woodstock, and offers therapy services in schools, nursing homes and to homebound patients who might otherwise not be able to travel to the center. Under the leadership of Neida Rechisky, McHenry, new county unit chairman, board members and volunteers exuded enthusiasm at the meeting because of the work by Mrs. Rechisky in obtaining Crusade volunteers. However, Bob Koren. member of the district ACS staff at Batavia, reminded volunteers at this organizational meeting that distribution of information on the ways to whip cancer is vital. "Early cancer is curable in 15) to 90 percent of the cases," he said. , Koren said one positive aspect of the 1983 Crusade is to stress the significance of mammography screening for breast cancer. This special x-ray can detect breast cancer when it is a small freckle. "This is part of the emphasis on early detection and early curability. Breast cancer can be detected years before a person can discover it through breast self examination," he continued. Koren said the Cancer Crusade goal is to reach the annual financial goal for Mcfffcnry county year's goal of $65,000 was not quite reached-$43,570 was colIected. Since last year Marengo area has set up its own unit. Mrs. Rechisky reported on a suc cessful promotion by Betsy Les, urging people to lose weight. The campaign in the McHenry area raised over $3,000. The 128 who completed the program lost a total of 815 pounds, she said. Mrs. Rechisky said the county unit's certificate to serve for another year , was received from the American Cancer society. As a fund-raising event, a Bike-A- Thon is planned for Sunday, May 22. When it is necessary to replace an old, cedar-shingle roof, must the shingles be completely removed or is it possible for the contractor to pnt down • plywood foun dation (over the shingles) for the installation of conven tional roofing material? The best procedure is to completely remove the shingles and start the new roof from scratch. The overlay will work if the roof supports are solid and the contractor uses nails of sufficient length. If short nails are used, contrac tion caused by changing temperatures may result in "humps" where nails pull upward at plywood seams. Increased fife insurance. Guaranteed.
