WALZ New medical dramas get good diagnosis Considering that NBC's "St. Elsewhere," despite its good reviews, is doing poorly in the ratings and that "M*A*S*H" is now off the air, one might won der what kind of future medical dramas have on the tube. By the looks of shows in development at the three major networks, medical series do have a strong tele-pulse. CBS, buoyed by the mild success of "Trapper John MD" and looking for a product to replace "M*A*S*H," has commis sioned "Houston MC" from MGM. The pilot, which will be shot on location at NASA in Houston, con cerns the world of space- age medicine and its appli cations to large and small medical centers. ABC has two develop ment projects that have been given the series go- ahead -- "Ryan's 4" and "Trauma Center." "Ryan's 4," which will have a spring debut, is from Henry Winkler's pro duction company and will star Tom Skerritt and Lisa Eilbacher ("Winds of War"). It's a contemporary medical drama in the "St. Elsewhere" mold. "Trauma Center," which may air in the late spring, is from 20th Century-Fox. The studio has constructed Torn Skerritt a functional, advanced mini-emergency room com plete with all the state-of- the-art gizmos. Lou Ferrig- no heads the cast of medical personnel who must try and save the lives of people who need imme diate treatment or else face death. Sounds like an updated "Emergency." There's also been talk of making "Shocktrauma," a TV-movie that starred Wil liam Conrad on an ad-hoo network last year, as a series as well. But that may take awhile. Moreover, Great Britain will give us a black medical comedy called "Britannia Hospital," starring an all- star English cast. It will fea ture cloning dramedies and Frankenstein-like experi ments by members of the lunatic staff. @1983 Compulofl
