+ 1 eSV " . . " Wfc McHenry Team 3rd At Polo Championship 3 \ It's a well known fact that McHenry County is a horse area. So it was probably fitting for a polo team from McHenry competing in the Invitational- World Championship of Polo held at the Rosemont Horizon last Feb. 11 and 15. The McHenry team was one of four teams that participated and they finished third. Now, just in case you don't know what polo is, it's a game something like hockey, except the players ride horses. Horsemanship plays an im portant part. The McHenry team consisted of Guy Aveedisin of Woodstock, Bill Tauber of McHenry and Ken Kramel of McHenry. The horses are trained and conditioned at the Willow Hill Farm in McHenry. "It was the the first polo game held at the Rosemont Horizon. It was also the largest attendance in the history of the sport," said Tauber. Toronto, Milwaukee and Hawaii were the other teams involved in the championship. The McHenry team lest the first game to Milwaukee 12-8, but won the second game, defeating Hawaii 7-5. Jo Jo, one of the McHenry horses was named the best playing pony. The horse was trained by Lizabeth Gallaher of Chicago. A crowd of 14,000 watched the four PAGE 7 -PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. The McHeru7 team was little below the overall average at 13 goals. Paul Offer of Toronto was the high scorer in the tournament with seven goals and was named most valuable player. The McHenry Warriors only had one winner during Monday's badmitton contest at West Campus. Number one singles player Donna Hoch defeated Alison Simon of DeKalb 11-5, 6-11 and 11-8. In McHenry County it is somewhat catching on, probably because of the large horse population. The large crowd at the Rosemont Horizon is a good indication the sport is growing. The game has its roots from India. A total of three players on each team are allowed on the field at a time and the object of the game is to move the ball into a eight-foot wide goal. The horses are small, so the rider is able to reach the ground with the polo stick. Horses usually average about 62-inches in height. Although really a horse, the animal is usually referred to as a polo pony. The horses in age range from four to 25-years-old. There are ap proximately four periods and each period is seven minutes long. A typical game lasts an hour. According to Bill Tauber, there are approximately 4,000 registered polo players in the United States Polo Organization. A game is refereed by three judges. In a typical tournament a best playing pony is chosen and the judges pick it. "They look for maneuverability, quickness, staying power," said Tauber. He added that the criteria pretty much ties in with the handicap of the player. The handicap is the total contribution to the team. Tauber also said horsemanship is very important and a player must play his position. But Tauber added that a good horse will do a lot on its own. "A horse can perform despite the riding ability of the rider," said Tauber. "A horse can be judged by the performance of its self. A horse must take care of its self. "Some horses are better in being told and executing than others. Choosing a horse is like choosing a person for a job. A horse is selected on athletic ability alone. Sometimes a horse will know how a horse will perform under pressure."
