MARCH U. I9KI WONDER LAKE Anne Sowers 653-9549 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 16, 1933) In the short course of four years more McHenry will celebrate its 100th birthday for it was in 1937 first white settlers came to this section of the country. The country, then, was only inhabited by the Indians, who by building stepping stones across the Fox river had made a fording place. Large blocks of limestone stood on end a pace apart. On these the Indians walked, stepping from stone to stone while their horses, at the end of the lead lines, swam the stream. In the city election April 19, there will be but one contest as Wm. G. Schreiner has filed his petition for city clerk and will be opposed by the present clerk, Peter Neiss. Other candidates will be Peter Doherty for mayor; Robert Weber, city treasurer; Herman Kreutzer, Nick Justen and Jacob Schaefer for aldermen. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 18, 1943) At last it's here! Rationing of meat, with each consumer getting two pounds per week, more or less, and rationing of cheese, butter, edible fats and oils and canned fish will begin midnight, March 28, according to the office of Price Administration. The red coupons of Ration Book 2 will be used by approximately 30,000,000 housewives in the long-expected ration program and the coupons will be interchangeable for any other rationed product. Each consumer will be able to spend 16 points a week. In a letter to the Plaindealer, George E. Johnson tells that soon his class will be ready to graduate from Advance Flight training, and he will be moving on to a new air base. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 20, 1958) Four persons have filed for three positions on the school board of District 15 (grade school). Two of the three men whose terms expire this spring are seeking reelection. They are Hubert (Huppy) Smith, who serves as secretary of the board and Harold (Hal) Vaupell of Country club subdivision. Two new names appear on the ballot. They are William Boyd Andrews of Fox street and M. Louis Peterson. Both are well known in McHenry. Collections from city sales tax in McHenry county, including 12 municipalities, netted $30,331.12 according to an announcement made this week by the state Department of Revenue. McHenry was third with $5,850.70, behind Woodstock and Crystal Lake. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 23. 1973) Sister M. Paulina, principal of Montini Primary center, along with Montini School Superintendent, Dom Rynicki, completed plans for a forum on National Catholic Schools Week to be held in Montini Middle school gymnasium. In a regular meeting, the City Council agreed to advertise for bids for two replacement squad cars and to replace a Motorola 46-watt two-way radio with a new Motorola 110-watt set for $200. Coach Ken Ludwig proudly presented the free-throw award to his son, Roger, who led the Warriors in free throws with 81 percent. The free throw award has been in existence since 1963 and Roger's 81 percent will be record high on the award. Mark Bentz was first in points average per game, leading rebounder (338), second in team assists and also shot over 59 percent from the field.
