Of those, 3.6 million will be come from northern Illinois. Dave Powers, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Revenue, said, "There's always a big push the last two weeks of March." As of March 5, the state received 3.8 million forms out of an expected 4.7 million. The state tax assistance number is doing a brisk business. Last year, the toll free number--(800) 252-8972-- received 500,000 calls. The line was shut down for several months this 5 year because of budget cuts, but reopened March 1. It will remain ope at least through the fiscal year unti June 30, Powers said. Operators only answer questions on state returns. The IRS has its own toll-free number + (800) 424-1040. There is also a new Tele-Tax information service for push-button phones. The closest number for McHenry county residents is Rockford at 987-4280. McGrail said there was not enough time to organize a regional number for those with dial phones. This year, two types of scholarships will be awarded to McHenry county applicants. As in the past, nurse scholarships will be offered to high school graduates. This scholarship helps cover expenses for training in the profession of nursing for a girl or boy from McHenry county. This scholarship also provides a small stipend for the recipients' personal needs.
