PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 25,1983 EARL WALSH So I Hear After returning from a Chamber of Commerce committee meeting last week, a friend asked when the organization was started in McHenry. No way I could remember the date so pulled out Lowell Nye's history of McHenry County. Credit that book for the following: lVUflie! V CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Business organization in McHenry •X began in the mid-Forties when the v-ufgent and pressing need was felt to consolidate the three business areas - Centerville, West McHenry, and Old Town - under one banner. The men who held the organization meeting in West McHenry, led by John Looze and others, decided to call it the McHenry Businessmen's Association. Active in that movement beside Mr.Looze were Clarence Niesen, George Collette, Charles Vycital, Albert Blake, Daniel Justen, and others. The Association held its meetings in the old American Legion hall above Joe Regner's grocery store. As time went on, the name Chamber of Commerce appealed to leading McHenryites, and so , on April ?4, 1952, the IVl^Henry Chamber of Commerce was incorporated not-for- profit with the following board of directors: John E. Looze, president; Albert S. Blacke, vice president; John E. Buckie, secretary; Earl R. Walsh, treasurer; Daniel A. Justen, A. J. "Tony" Wirtz, Mildred Hohman, Jack C. Thies, Russell M. Switzer, August Freund, Dr. J. E. Sayler, John F. Torrence, and Richard Hester. The first meeting as the C-C board of directors was held on May 1, 1952. Old Timers will remember Simon Stoffel, an outstanding citizen of McHenry in earlier days. About 55 years ago, I attended a meeting where Mr. Stoffel sat in the back row of the hall. I thought he was asleep until the chairman called on him for the usual few words. We heard a speech that has lingered, stressing predictions that a machine age would come and take over many jobs performed by meq. Some thought that was far into the future. Our speaker was ahead of his time. Sodium is a mineral found in nature and in almost all the food we eat. Salt is the common name for sodium chloride, which is about half sodium. You need sodium to live. But you get enough in fresh foods. There's no need to add more. Learn to use pepper and other spices and herbs in place of salt, and to enjoy the natural flavor of food. Most foods in their natural state contain only a small amount of sodium. On the other hand, food that has been processed is usually high in sodium. More than half of the sodium in the average diet comes from the salt and other sodium com pounds that are added to food at home or by the food manufacturer. Table salt is the biggest That same night we heard Mr. Stoffel tell about over organization with too many people at the top drawing too much money. He cited duplications. If it was bad in his day, he should see it today. I wouldn't want to report our sudden turn in the weather to any of our friends in places like Arizona, Florida or California except to say I'm glad I didn't succumb to the urge to remove our snow tires. SOME ZEKE-O-GRAMS: "The less people think of their greatness the more we think of it." - Francis Bacon. "Some men succeed by what they know; some by what they do and a few by what they are." -Elbert Hubbard. "You know the years are catching up when the knees buckle but the belt won't". A timid man said to his wife; "We're not going out tonight -- and that's semi-final." -Toastmaster. After writing about Saints the last two weeks, I am looking for some little devils. After politicians get through telling the shortcomings of their opponents, it is no wonder so many voters stay away from the polls. OLD SAYINGS: The better the day the better the deed. Know thy friends. Your enemies will surface. The early bird catches the worm. (And the early worm gets caught). 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. You will recover.
